Bobcats Clinch Tournament Spot Despite Setback

MOBILE, Ala. – The Texas State soccer team had limited chances Sunday at The Cage as South Alabama claimed a 4-0 victory. Despite the loss and with other results from around the Sun Belt Conference, the Bobcats have punched their ticket to the conference tournament.

TXST is now 8-6-3 and 3-3-3 in the Sun Belt with the result. The Jaguars improved to 14-0-3, 7-0-2 in conference play and secured the Sun Belt's regular season title.

"It was a tough loss today but certainly no shame in dropping the game to South Alabama. We had a handful of quality chances and needed to more clinical when we got them, but it seemed like each time we got some momentum they would score," said head coach Steve Holeman. "We did some good things today and need to move forward and get ready for the next one."

Offensively, the Bobcats were held to four shots with just two on frame. Both shots on goal came off the foot of Zoe Junior in the second half. Also attempting two shots on the afternoon as Olivia Wright.

Caitlyn Draper recorded three saves between the posts to give her 51 stops on the season.

USA struck first at the end of the 14th minute when Amber Fortenberry's corner kick when directly into the goal.

Wright had an opportunity to tie the match in the 25th minute when she beat a defender to a ball back into the box. She spun and attempted a left-footed shot that sailed just wide of the left post.

The Jaguars doubled their lead with just over four minutes until halftime when Gabby Hollar converted a penalty kick.

A great chance to cut into the deficit came just over six minutes into the second half. Lily Erb dumped a pass down the right side to Junior, who sent a cross into the box. Anna Dunch was there to attempt a header at the back post but could not direct it on frame as it hit the side netting.

The lead for USA increased to three as Irene Campo put a shot into the goal off a short pass from Gabby Hollar early in the 69th minute. A little over four minutes later, Gracie Wilson knocked in the final goal of the match when she put back a rebounded shot attempt by Hollar.

Next up for the Bobcats is the regular season finale and Senior Night on Thursday. They will host Southern Miss at 6 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
