Bobcats Claim Hard Fought Point on the Road

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Texas State soccer team (7-5-3, 2-2-3 SBC) earned a big point on the road as it played to a 0-0 draw at James Madison (6-2-7, 3-0-4 SBC) on Friday night from Sentara Park.

"James Madison is extremely talented and it's easy to see why they were picked to win the league. I was proud of our effort and discipline tonight. We worked incredibly hard and secured a valuable point on the road," said head coach Steve Holeman. "To shutout such a talented team took a full team effort and a great performance from our backline. WE also knew that [Caitlyn] Draper would need to come up big a few times and she did that."

In goal, Caitlyn Draper made six saves with three in each half. It was her fifth shutout of the season and is the most by a Bobcat goalkeeper since Heather Martin had seven in 2019.

The only Bobcats to attempt a shot on the evening was Zoe Junior and Victoria Meza with two apiece. Meza placed both of her shots on frame while one from Junior was stopped by the Dukes' keeper. Defensively, TXST allowed 11 shots with six on frame with none in the second half really being threatening.

Both teams would be denied a shot until Victoria Meza took a shot from 35 yards out in the 25th minute. Her low attempt went straight into the arms of Alexandra Blom.

A turnover by the Dukes in their own defensive third saw Junior pounce on the ball. After a touch that centered the ball at the top of the box, she unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that sailed over the crossbar.

JMU almost got on the scoreboard three minutes after Meza's shot. A header by Amanda Attanasi off a free kick hit off the bottom of the crossbar and bounced away from the frame.

Draper made two big stops to keep the match scoreless in the first 45 minutes. The freshman made a diving stop at the left post off a shot from Lexi Vanderlinden early in the 34th minute. Just over four minutes later, Ellie Johnson ripped an attempt from just inside the 18-yard box that was kept out by Draper due to her quick reactions.

The best opportunity for the Bobcats in the second half came nearly 15 minutes into the period. Meza took a crack from 20 yards out but was caught by Blom.

Next up for the Bobcats is a home match on Thursday when they face Old Dominion for the first time in program history. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
