SAN MARCOS, Texas – After breaking the 21-second mark in the men's indoor 200 meter for the first time in school history last weekend,
Dominick Yancy was named the Sun Belt Men's Track Athlete of the Week for the period ending January 15, the conference office announced.
Â
Competing at the Corky Classic in Lubbock for the Bobcats' first indoor meet of the season, Yancy ran 20.97 in the men's 200 to set the new program record. He also helped the men's 4x400 relay set a school record with a time of 3:08.23 – a record that stood for 37 years.
Â
Yancy, a four-time Sun Belt individual champion and runner-up in last year's men's 200 at the indoor conference meet, finished sixth in the men's 200 at the Corky Classic and third as part of the men's 4x400 relay.
Â
A senior from Euless, Texas, Yancy currently holds the Sun Belt's best men's 200 time in the young indoor season. His time was adjusted to 21.04 for altitude, and he is among three Bobcats (others:
Ashton Callahan, 21.27, and
Brian West, 21.42) in the conference's top-three times.
Â
Nationally, Yancy's 200 time is currently 12th-best while the men's 4x400 time – adjusted to 3:08.65 for altitude – is eighth-best.
Â
This is Yancy's third career Sun Belt Track Athlete of the Week award and first during the indoor season. He won two last year in outdoor.
Â
Yancy and the Bobcats return to Lubbock this weekend for their next meet, the Red Raider Open on Friday. The meet can be watched on
ESPN+.
