LUBBOCK, Texas – Sedrickia Wynn and
Dominick Yancy set school records in the 60 meter hurdles and 200 meters, respectively, while the men's 4x400 relay broke a 37-year-old school record to highlight Texas State's final day at the Corky Classic at the Sports Performance Center.
Â
Yancy, who already owned the program record in the indoor 200, reset the top mark with the first sub-21 second race ever by a Bobcat in the event. He ran 20.97 in his heat, finishing sixth overall in the meet, and now has four of the top-eight times in the indoor 200 in school history.
Â
Wynn, meanwhile, set her first individual school record of her career with a time of 8.28 in the first round of the 60 meter hurdles. The time was second-fastest in the preliminary round and moved her into the finals where she finished fifth overall with a time of 8.34 – which is third-fastest in program history.
Â
Wynn's pair of top-10 marks in school history, along with Yancy's school record, were among nine top-10 school marks registered by the Bobcats on Saturday.
Â
One of the others was the school-record by the 4x400 men's relay that included Yancy,
Taahir Kelly,
Avery Veiseh and
Brian West. The group's time of 3:08.23 was more than two seconds faster than the previous school-best, which was 3:10.97 set in 1986.
Â
"We had a great to start to our season with numerous PRs and three school records," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country John Frazier. "We still have a lot of work ahead of us as we approach our team goals."
Wynn also established three personal-best times – in the 60 meters, 60 meter hurdles and indoor 200 – to help make up the nine PRs recorded by the Bobcats.
Dre'Quan Crawford (6.95) and
Daniel Harrold (6.92) had career marks in the 60 meters,
Simon Thor in the 60 meter hurdles (8.85),
Daneille Lynch in the 60 meter hurdles (9.22), and
Lauryn Small in the shot put (15.36m/50-4.75). Yancy's 200 meter time was also a PR.
Sadi Giles, a former conference champion in the 60 meter race, returned to the track and posted the second-fastest time in school history in the event with a time of 7.40 in the first round. It matched her best times from last season and fell two-hundredths of a second short of the school record – which she owns when she won the Sun Belt conference title in 2020.
Â
Giles also ran 24.25 in the 200 meter race to finish fifth overall.
Â
Ashton Callahan ran 21.20 in the men's 200 meter, which was the third-best time in school history. He finished eighth in the event, two spots behind Yancy.
Â
Freshman
Melanie Duron, in her first collegiate event, took first in the women's shot put to start the day for Texas State. Duron threw 16.01 meters/52-6.5, which was the sixth-farthest in school history.
Â
In total, five Bobcats finished in the top-10 of the women's shot put.
Carly Watts (15.36m/50-4.75) tied Small for fourth while
Ebony Wolridge (13.73m/45-0.5) and Sophia Harberer (13.47m/44-2.5) finished ninth and 10th, respectively.
Â
Mathilde Canet fell a centimeter short of her personal-best, recording a 5.93 meter/19-5.5 long jump, to take first in the B section of the event and third overall. She had a 5.94 meter/19-6 jump in last season's Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships.
Â
In addition to finishing in a tie for fourth in the women's shot put, Small blew past her personal-best in the event with a throw of 15.36 meters/50-4.75. She had entered the day having not thrown farther than 14.66 meters/48-1.25 in indoor or outdoor. She also finished eighth last year at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships with a throw of 13.76 meters/45-1.75, meaning Saturday's throw was more than five feet farther than last year's final toss in the indoor season.
Â
Texas State will return to Lubbock next weekend for its second indoor meet of the season. The Bobcats will compete in the Red Raider Open on Friday, January 20.
