LUBBOCK, Texas – Simon Thor won his section of the pole vault, three Bobcats finished runner-up in their respective events, and
Brian West ran a top-10 time in school history as Texas State track and field competed in day one of its first indoor meet of the year at the Corky Classic on Friday.
Â
Thor's claim of the top spot in section B of the men's pole vault was achieved with a height of 5.02 meters/16-5.5, which matched his best indoor mark of his career. He cleared the same height in the Sun Belt Indoor Championships last season.
Â
Freshmen
Elisabet Runarsdottir and
Mia Ruffino finished second in the weight throw and women's pole vault section B, respectively, to make up two of the three runner-up finishes for the Bobcats. Runarsdottir, from Ko'pavogur, Iceland, threw 18.02 meters/59-1.5 in her sixth and final attempt to claim a tie for second in her first collegiate event. Ruffino, meanwhile, cleared 3.53 meters/11-7 in section B of the women's pole vault to finish second.
Â
Runarsdottir was one of five Texas State newcomers competing in the women's weight throw and four freshmen. Across all events, there were 12 Bobcat freshmen, including Ruffino, that competed on Friday.
Â
Katherine Stuckly, a two-time conference champion in the indoor high jump, finished second in the event with a clearance of 1.70 meters/5-7.
Â
Returner West was one of two Bobcats in section B of the men's 200 meter, and he finished with a personal-best time of 21.35. It was the fifth-fastest ever by a Bobcat in the event as now five of the six fastest times in school history in the men's indoor 200 have been registered since last season.
Â
Day two of the Corky Classic will start at 11 am on Saturday with the women's shot put, women's pole vault (section A), women's long jump, and women's mile.
