SAN ANGELO, Texas – The first tournament under new Head Coach
Kendall Brooks was successful as Texas State won two singles flights and two doubles flights at the ASU Slam Fest, and a big win from new addition
Kiana Graham in the top singles flight.
"This weekend was a great start to the fall," said Brooks. "We got to play a lot of competitive matches to gauge where we are and what we need to work on."
SINGLES
Kiana Graham, a junior transfer from SMU, had a dominant showing in her first performance as a Bobcat. She won the top flight defeating one ASU opponent and two from Tarleton State. In the final and third round of flight A, Graham defeated Tarleton State's Martha Makantasi 4-6, 6-1, 10-4.
"Really proud of Kiana going out in her first tournament as a Bobcat and winning the top flight," Brooks said.
Kate Malazonia won her second-round match in flight A 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 against Sears from Abilene Christian.
Mae McCutcheon advanced the final round of flight B but lost in straight sets against Christine Jevicky.
Freshman
Andrea Pineda won the consolation of flight C in her first outing as a Bobcat, she defeated Ayda Guler 6-1, 6-1 in round two, and shutout Erika Synoski from Southwestern 6-0, 6-0 in round three.
Jadeh Chan started her senior season off by winning flight D. Chan defeated her opponents in straight sets in all three rounds. She secured the flight win by defeating Ramitha Irrinki 6-2, 6-4.
DOUBLES
Texas State won two of the three doubles flights. Pineda and Chan went undefeated in three rounds, taking down Boisson and Razet from Tarleton State 8-5 in the finals.
Chan won both her singles and doubles draws, going 6-0 on the weekend.
Maria Lora and freshman
Jacqueline Schnabel won flight C downing their opponents 8-3 in the first two rounds, and 8-2 in the finals against Synoski and Garcia from Southwestern.
"I was impressed with how all of our doubles teams looked," said Brooks. "I am really excited about this group and another chance to compete this upcoming weekend."
The Bobcats continue play when they travel to Kingsville, Texas for the Javelina Jam Sept. 16-17.
