SAN MARCOS, Texas – An experienced coach with success at the national level, Stefan Campos has been named the new Texas State Assistant Track & Field Coach – Cross Country, Texas State Director of Track & Field/Cross Country John Frazier announced.

Campos arrives at Texas State after serving as an assistant coach for track and field and cross country at Western Texas College for the last seven years. He helped the cross country teams make three different appearances at the NJCAA National Championships as well as achieve 12 school records set in track and field events.

"We have made a great hire in Stefan Campos to lead our cross country and track and field distance runners," said Frazier. "He comes with several years of coaching experience and a great knowledge of the Texas distance running scene. He will be a significant addition to what we have started here at Texas State."

In 2020, Campos helped the Texas Western College women's cross country team finish ninth in the NJCAA Cross Country National Championships and the men's team finish 11th. In 2017, his second season in his role with the Westerners, the men's cross country team made an appearance in the national championships.

"I would like to thank Coach Frazier, Coach Kendall Gustafson, and Coach Trent Edgerton for the amazing opportunity to join their coaching staff," said Campos. "I'm excited for the vision that Coach Frazier has for this program moving forward. I noticed the progress made at the national level last season, and the plan is to bring my passion, knowledge and commitment to help build upon last year's success. Texas State University is in a great location, in one of the best track and field states in the country. I would not want to be anywhere else."

In addition to his cross country coaching experience, Campos tutored three different individual national champions in track and field. He mentored back-to-back NCJAA indoor women's high jump national titles in 2017 and 2018 and the 2019 NJCAA men's 800 meter national champion.

A graduate of Tarleton State, Campos began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant in 2015. In that time, he helped the women's cross country team win the Lone Star Conference championship while also assisting the men's team to a runner-up finish in conference.

Campos was a former student-athlete at Tarleton State and holds the indoor school record in the 1,000 meter run.

He holds an undergraduate degree in business administration (2014) and master's degree in kinesiology (2016) from Tarleton.

The Bobcat cross country teams officially start their 2022 season on September 2 at the UIW Twilight in San Antonio.
