#11 Bobcats Open Sun Belt Championship on Wednesday

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Entering on a 10-game winning streak, 11th-ranked Texas State (44-11, 26-4 Sun Belt) is scheduled to open the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. from Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama against ULM (20-34-1, 9-20-1 Sun Belt).
 
All games of the tournament will be streamed on ESPN+ with Matt Stewart and former Bobcat head coach Ty Harrington on the call. Fans can also catch TXST's games on KTSW 89.9 FM with Brant Freeman calling the action. Live stats will also be available.

For the 11th consecutive week, Texas State is ranked and is in all six major polls for the third straight week and seventh time this season. The Bobcats moved up in the Baseball America (#15), Collegiate Baseball (#9), D1Baseball (#11), Perfect Game (#19) and USA Today (#14) polls while dropping a spot in the NCBWA (#12) rankings.
 
SUN BELT REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS
Texas State claimed its second Sun Belt regular season title in the last three full seasons with a series opening victory at Georgia State. It is the Bobcats fifth regular season championship overall with the 2019 crown and three straight from 2009-11 as members of the Southland Conference.
 
RECORD SETTING VICTORY TOTALS
This season saw TXST set a program record with 44 overall wins and 26 conference victories. The overall total surpassed the previous best of 41 set in 2009 and matched in 2011. In league action, the 2009 and 2011 squads both won 24 contests.
 
TXST IN SUN BELT CHAMPIONSHIP
For the eighth time, Texas State will be playing in the Sun Belt Championship. The Bobcats are 9-13 all-time when playing in the tournament. They have lost their last five games with the most recent win coming on May 25, 2018 with an 11-1 seven-inning run rule victory over Louisiana on the Ragin' Cajuns home field. Four times (2014-15, 2017-18) TXST has advanced to the semifinals.
 
POSTSEASON SUN BELT AWARDS
A record-breaking season saw more broken when it came to postseason conference awards. Texas State led the Sun Belt with seven all-conference selections with five (Dalton Shuffield, Tristan Stivors, Justin Thompson, Levi Wells, Zeke Wood) making the first team with both setting new team records. Second team honors went to outfielders Jose Gonzalez and John Wuthrich. Shuffield was named the league's Player of the Year, the first since Paul Goldschmidt earned the honor in 2009 in the Southland Conference, and Steven Trout picked up the Ron Maestri Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT TEXAS STATE
Shuffield enters the tournament leading Texas State in batting average (.393), hits (84), runs (74), doubles (20), stolen bases (16) and triples (5). He has also hit 12 home runs and driven in 45 RBI. Also batting over .300 is Peyton Lewis (.310), Gonzalez (.307) and Thompson (.335). Joining Shuffield with double-digit homers is Wesley Faison (10), Gonzalez (10) and Wuthrich (14).
 
Wells and Wood have combined to go 13-2 on the mound with a 2.88 and 3.55 ERA, respectively. Wood has struck out a team-high 85 and Wells has recorded 72.
 
Out of the bullpen, Stivors leads the nation with 17 saves while striking out 68 in 49 innings. Triston Dixon comes in at 8-0 with a 2.95 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 26 appearances spanning 58 frames. Also making more than 20 appearances has been Matthew Nicholas with 22 while going 2-1 and sporting a 2.76 ERA and 16 strikeouts.
 
SCOUTING ULM
ULM upset Georgia State on Tuesday 8-5 to advance to the double-elimination portion of the championship. Chase DeJean plated three runs and both Matthew Lee and Grant Schulz drove in two on the afternoon. Picking up the win was Carson Orton, who struck out three in three innings out of the bullpen.

ALL-TIME VS. THE WARHAWKS 
TXST leads the all-time series over ULM 50-36 including a season sweep on the road back on May 6-8. The Bobcats are 2-1 against the Warhawks at a neutral site with the last meeting coming in 2019 at the Sun Belt Championship. That day saw ULM upset top seeded Texas State 8-0. Bobcats have neutral site wins in 2014 (4-2; Mobile, Ala.) and 1999 (5-4; Shreveport, La.).
