SAN MARCOS, Texas – Six home runs was hit by Texas State Saturday afternoon in a slugfest with Georgia Southern that saw the visitors come out on top 13-11.
John Wuthrich led the onslaught with two homers while one apiece was hit by
Wesley Faison,
Peyton Lewis,
Daylan Pena and
Justin Thompson.
Â
With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 23-9 on the year and 8-3 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Eagles are now 20-10 overall and 8-3 in league play.
Â
Both
Jose Gonzalez and
Dalton Shuffield led TXST with three base knocks apiece. Recording two hits each was
Cameron Gibbons, Thompson and Wuthrich, who drove in four runs.
Â
Jake Martin (1-0) picked up the win and Ga'Von Wray earned his first save of the season. Suffering the loss was
Peyton Zabel (0-1).
Â
Levi Wells started and struck out five in four innings.
Jonathan Martinez worked an inning of relief and
Tony Robie threw 2.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Â
The Bobcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Thompson's two-run shot in the first. The lead was cut in half in the top of the fourth by GS.
Â
Â
A walk on four-pitches to Thompson was followed by a single to right off the bat of Gonzalez. The very next pitch saw Wuthrich launch a 3-run round tripper to left center. Faison made it back-to-back jacks with a solo shot.
Â
Â
Texas State appeared to add another run on a single by Shuffield. He tried to stretch it into a double but the throw reached second quicker than expected. The shortstop took a step towards his counterpart and then threw home to catch
Ben McClain in a rundown. The Eagles' third baseman chased the junior outfielder home and his throw was wide towards the front of the plate. As McClain was about to slide, Jason Swan leapt in front of the base path to cause McClain to change his course of direction on his slide to the front of the plate, as well, instead of straight in to avoid a collision and possible injury. Obstruction on Swan was not called and McClain was ruled to have been tagged out to end the frame and give the visitors some momentum.
Â
The Eagles used that momentum to score seven straight runs over the next two innings.
Â
Lewis cranked the first pitch to him in the sixth off the scoreboard in right field to cut the deficit in half. Gibbons laced a single to left and moved up on a slow grounder to second. Shuffield would follow with an RBI single to tie the game.
Â
Â
Facing a full count, Pena hit a 3-2 offering over the left field wall to put the Bobcats back ahead 10-8.
Â
Â
The lead was short lived as GS plated five runs in the next half inning.
Â
Wuthrich started the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot down the right field line on what turned out to be the final run of the ball game.
Â
Â
Next up is the series finale on Sunday with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
