SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior
Jose Gonzalez hit a walk-off double as Texas State claimed a 10-9 victory over Georgia Southern in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.
Â
"Fortunately, my teammates had two really good at bats before me. My job wasn't that hard and I wasn't trying to do too much," said Gonzalez. "We had plan against the pitcher and luckily he left one over the plate and I was able to get to it."
Â
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 24-9 overall and 9-3 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Eagles fall to 20-11 on the year and 8-4 in conference play.
Â
"It's a really gusty win on our part. All weekend we were trying to find ways to stop them with the wind blowing out," said head coach
Steven Trout. "We gave it up in the ninth and then we found a way to bounce back."
Â
Picking up the win was
Tristan Stivors (4-1) after he worked the ninth. Ben Johnson (3-3) allowed two runs on two hits and walks in 1.2 innings to suffer the loss.
Â
Getting the start on the rubber was
Cameron Bush, who struck out four in 3.2 innings.
Triston Dixon struck out three in 2.1 innings and
Trevis Sundgren tossed two scoreless frames with two strikeouts.
Â
Isaiah Ortega-Jones went 3-for-4 at the plate and fell a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Both
Wesley Faison and
Dalton Shuffield finished with three RBI while Gonzalez plated two. Recording two base knocks apiece was
Justin Thompson, Gonzalez and Shuffield.
Â
The scoring began in the first with a solo homer from Christian Avant. TXST answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff homer by Shuffield.
Â
An RBI single from Gonzalez put the Bobcats in front for the first time on the afternoon and Faison increased the advantage to 5-1 after the first frame with a three-run round tripper.
Â
GS retook the lead in the fourth with a five-spot.
Â
Thompson tied the game in the fifth with an opposite field shot to right for his fifth home run of the season.
Â
Again, the Eagles went back ahead on a homer that got just inside the right field foul pole in the sixth
Â
Texas State answered back with an
August Ramirez solo shot to right center in the bottom of the frame. A Shuffield RBI single later in the inning put the Bobcats back in the lead at 8-7.
Â
The score would remain that way until the ninth when GS scratched two runs across for a 9-8 advantage.
Â
Ortega-Jones led off the bottom of the ninth with a shot to right center for a triple as the ball was misplayed on the hop by the centerfielder to get to the wall. A 1-1 offering to Shuffield was bashed to deep center that allowed Ortega-Jones to trot home and tie the game.
Â
With two gone,
John Wuthrich was hit by a pitch and Thompson was issued a free pass on four pitches. Down 0-2 in the count, Gonzalez battled back to a 2-2 and sent the seventh pitch he saw to right field for the walk-off double.
Â
Next up for TXST is a meeting with Baylor on Tuesday in San Marcos. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
