Wilson Registers One of the Best Hammer Throws in NCAA History

Graduate student now has the second-best mark in the NCAA this year

WACO, Texas – Texas State's Alyssa Wilson became only the fourth different NCAA athlete to register a hammer throw of 73.20+ meters (240+ feet) as she highlighted day one of the Michael Johnson Invitational for the Bobcats on Friday at the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.

Wilson, who set two school records, won the meet's hammer throw with a toss of 73.20 meters/240-2, which not only set the meet and stadium records but smashed the school record – a mark she set four weeks ago (71.36m/234-1).

However, the throw was even more notable as it is the second-best collegiate mark in the country this year and sixth best in the world. In NCAA history, it stands as the 18th-best overall as she joins a group of three other throwers who have surpassed the 240-foot threshold. It also bested the Olympic standard used for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last summer (72.50 meters).

Wilson added another school record in the discus with a throw of 57.61 meters/189-0 to better her previous school best by nearly two feet. She finished second in the event as it was her best discus toss in her career since she threw the same distance at the NCAA Regionals in 2021 with UCLA.

Wilson now owns 11 marks in the school's top-10 across three different events for the outdoor season. She has the top-six marks in the hammer throw, all of which are over 69 meters.

Windy conditions filled the running and jumping events throughout the day. Although they were under wind-aided conditions, Victoria Wright did run her fastest 200 meter time of her career (25.56) while Dre'Quan Crawford did the same on the men's side (21.64).

In the men's 1500 meter, Travian Holst led all Bobcats with a time of 4:04.67 to finish 22nd while Kwanele Mthembu finished a second off his PR with a time of 4:06.30.

Texas State is among 17 colleges in the meet.

The final day of the Michael Johnson Invitational will get underway at 11:30 am on Saturday with the women's javelin. The running events commence at 2:30 pm.
