Box Score PEACHTREE CITY, Ga.- No. 9 Texas State upsets No. 8 Appalachian State 4-2 in the opening match of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
"We had a lot of things going in our favor today," said Texas State women's tennis head coach
Tory Plunkett. "The players stepped up and took advantage of the opportunity and played very well. It was a good team win! We are very proud of the team. We are going to enjoy the win and then tonight we will bring the team together and prepare for tomorrow."
The Bobcats avenged their loss to the Mountaineers from earlier this season by taking the doubles point and three singles matches.
Appalachian State did not have a player for the No. 6 singles match, which also resulted in the No. 3 doubles match not being played and going in the Bobcats favor.
Doubles
Mae McCutcheon and
Jadeh Chan clinched the doubles point winning their match on line two 6-1.
Hana Kvapilova and
Mae McCutcheon, recently selected for the Sun Belt Doubles All-Conference Second Team, went unfinished in their match 6-3 on line one.
Singles
Freshman
Maria Lora extended her win streak to three after her first championship match as a Bobcat. Lora defeated Brooke Gruber 6-3, 6-1 to give the Bobcats their first singles point of the day.
The deciding point for the Bobcats came down to Kvapilova and Malazonia's matches.
Malazonia went unfinished in her third set after battling back 6-4, 3-6, 1-3 against Ellie Murphy when Kvapilova clinched the fourth point to push the Bobcats ahead.
Kvapilova was selected for the Sun Belt Singles All-Conference First Team by the conference this morning. She further proved her spot on that team by coming back while down three in the first set against Helena Jansen to get the 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win.
Renata Gonzalez won by walkover due to Appalachian State not having a player.
