SAN MARCOS, Texas – Despite falling behind early, No. 17 Texas State (29-9) claimed a 14-12 victory over I-35 rival UTSA (24-13) Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark. The win extended the Bobcats' winning streak to six games.
Â
"A win is a win. Our offense was really good tonight, took advantage of some free 90s and barreled up some baseballs tonight. They have some really good arms over there with power stuff," said head coach
Steven Trout. "
Victor Loa was good and then
Triston Dixon came in and got that double play ball followed by another good inning for us."
Â
Picking up the win was
Triston Dixon (6-0) after he worked 1.2 scoreless innings while
Tristan Stivors recorded the final two outs, both by strikeout, to earn his eighth save of the year. Taking the loss was Ryan Beaird (1-1) after surrendering four runs on four walks and one hit and recording two outs.
Â
Jose Gonzalez paced TXST at the dish with a 3-for-4 day and falling a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. He also drove in five runs.
Ben McClain drew three walks and scored thrice. Also coming around to score two times was
Dalton Shuffield,
Justin Thompson,
John Wuthrich and Gonzalez. Multi-hit games were recorded by
Cameron Gibbons, Shuffield and Wuthrich.
Â
The Roadrunner jumped out to a two-run advantage after their first time at the plate.
Â
McClain worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the frame and would advance to second when a pick off attempt from the catcher was off target to first. Gonzalez brought him home with a double off the centerfield wall to cut the deficit in half.
Â
UTSA would go back up by two with a run in the top of the third.
Â
The next frame saw Gonzalez single to right and both Thompson and Wuthrich were walked to load the bases.
Daylan Pena was also issued a free pass to bring in a run. A sacrifice fly to left off the bat of
August Ramirez tied the game and a wild pitch would allow Wuthrich to score to put the Bobcats in front 4-3.
Â
A 1-2 offering to Leyton Barry led off the fourth with a shot to right field that saw Wuthrich make a leaping catch at the wall to rob him of a home run. UTSA was able to load the bases but Dixon came on and induced an inning-ending double play on his lone pitch of the frame.
Â
Seven runs were tallied by Texas State in the bottom of the fourth with three coming on a home run by Gonzalez. Also driving in a run in the frame was
Wesley Faison, Gibbons, Pena and Shuffield.
Â
The Roadrunners scored twice in the seventh to make it a six-run advantage. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Gonzalez, who worked a walk to bring in a run. Two batters later, Wuthrich singled through the left side to plate two runs to make it a 14-5 ballgame for TXST.
Â
In the ninth, UTSA scored seven times behind six hits, three walks and an error. On a 3-2 offering, Stivors was able to get Nick Crespo looking to wrap up the contest.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a weekend series against Little Rock. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
