Relay Teams Set School Records on Final Day of Charles Austin Classic

The women's and men's 4x100 meter relay teams posted big marks

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State's 4x100 meter men's and women's relay teams set school records and Alyssa Wilson nearly established another program record in the shot put – missing it by 3 centimeters – as the Bobcats wrapped up day two of the 2022 Charles Austin Classic at the Texas State Track & Field Complex on Saturday.

The Bobcats totaled five school top-10 marks and nine personal bests in the meet named after the Olympic gold medalist and Texas State alum.

"The great thing is we've been working hard, pretty much working through this meet to prepare ourselves for the postseason," said Texas State director of track and field John Frazier. "And to be at a point where we're getting PRs and still improving after hard work in the weight room and hard work on the track, I feel really good where our team is right now."

The women's 4x100 team set a new standard for the program as Anayah Washington, Christine Irving, Kiana Rollins and Sedrickia Wynn combined to run 44.94, beating out the previous record by three hundredths of a second. The quartet took first place in the event as well.

On the men's side, the team of Bervensky Pierre, Dominick Yancy, Daniel Harrold, and Ashton Callahan ran 39.76 to finish second but matched the school mark set five years ago. It was only the fifth time in program history a group of Bobcats ran sub-40 seconds in the event.

"With some health issues, we're finally able to put together relay teams," said Frazier. "We're still beat up with our women's 4x400 meter (team), but we'll be ready when the time comes. I'm very happy, especially with the fact they were running amongst a small field."

Wilson, who continued to etch her name atop the school record books, threw 17.41 meters in the shot put to post the second-best mark ever by a Bobcat. She recorded the mark in her final throw after registering distances of 16.50 meters or less in her four scored tosses. It beat out her previous season-best by more than 1.3 meters.

The shot put was not the only top school mark by Wilson. In the discus, she threw 55.55 meters which is third best in program history. Wilson already owns the top two-school marks in the implement and is the only female Bobcat to throw more than 55 meters.

Wilson, in her first season at Texas State, now owns the top school outdoor marks in the shot put, discus and hammer throw.

Lee-Anne Blake also put her name in another category in the school record book as the sophomore from South Africa ran 2:07.41 in the 800 meter to register the second-fastest time in school history. Blake won the event by more than 10 seconds and now has the second fastest times in program history in the 800 meter and 1500 meter.

Luize Opola approached the school top-10 in the heptathlon, scoring 4,825 points to win the event. The sophomore used a personal best in the 100 meter hurdles on Friday (14.95 seconds) to score 845 points and help put her near the 5,000-point threshold.

In the decathlon, Simon Thor notched a personal best in five of the 10 implements to score 6,959 points and finish third. Texas State alum and unattached Ben Collerton won with 7,538 points.

Wynn (100 meter) and Katherine Stuckly (high jump) won their respective events to give the Bobcats seven first-place finishes on the final day of the meet.

The Bobcats return to action with their penultimate regular season meet of the year, the Michael Johnson Classic at Baylor, on April 22 and 23.
