SAN MARCOS, TX — Just three months after "a very young team," according to Texas State cheerleading head coach
Jocelyn Stephens, finished 10th in the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Nationals, the program announced Monday afternoon its 2022-23 cheerleaders.
"We are thrilled to have a small co-ed and all-girl teams this season," said Stephens. "There are 20 members on the small co-ed and 27 on the all-girl squad, so this is the largest the program has been in the five years since I became head coach.
Over the summer, Stephens' teams will train over campus before attending a UCA College Spirit camp. Once the fall semester begins, the cheer groups will be on the sidelines for all home football, volleyball, men's and women's basketball games. When the teams aren't participating in game day activities, the student-athletes will be preparing for the national meet that occurs near the turn of the calendar.
"We also have the most returners in the program — since I've been here — with only one senior from the 2021-22 season having graduated," Stephens said. "We are motivated, goal driven and ready to be back on the sidelines and training for nationals."
