Heading down I-35: Softball looks for season-long four-game winning streak on Wednesday

SAN MARCOS, TX —Winners of four of its last five games, the Texas State softball program will look to extend its current three-game winning streak to a season-best four straight when the Bobcats travel to San Antonio to play UTSA on Wednesday, March 30 at 6 p.m. CT.

Texas State, which is 17-13 on the season and 5-4 in Sun Belt action, is coming off a three-game sweep at Coastal Carolina, where the Bobcats outscored the Chanticleers 26-9 throughout the series. It was the first three-game sweep of a conference foe for Texas State since taking all three contests against UTA (8-0, 2-1, 4-2) to close out the 2021 regular season.

A win over the Roadrunners would give Texas State its longest regular season winning streak (4) since winning six straight from April 24 to May 1, 2021, when the Bobcats swept Georgia Southern, beat Houston Baptist, and then took the first two games at Troy.

Prior to last weekend, the Bobcats had won back-to-back games on four separate occasions and had a three-game winning streak from Wednesday March 2 to Friday, March 4 with wins over Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Loyola Chicago and North Dakota.

INSIDE THE SERIES: UTSA

Following its 4-0 win over UTSA on Tuesday, March 15, Texas State will be looking for its sixth straight win over UTSA dating back to the 2019 season. Since 2016 — the one year the two teams didn't play since the series began in 1992 — the Bobcats have won nine of their last 10 matchups against the Roadrunners.

A win for Texas State Wednesday night would add more separation between the two programs with regards to the all-time record as the Bobcats currently hold a 47-43 advantage.

In games played in San Antonio, Texas State is 18-17 all-time against UTSA and are winners of the last four contests played in the Alamo City, including an 8-1 matchup the last time the two met in San Antonio on March 13, 2021.

EYEING THE TOP SPOT

Texas State sophomore right-handed pitcher Jessica Mullins will enter Wednesday night's game with team-leading marks in: ERA (2.39), wins (12) and strikeout (138), among additional categories. The youngster is currently the Sun Belt's leader in innings pitched (117.0) and ranks second in strikeouts and wins, behind Troy's Leanna Johnson (164 and 13, respectively).

Against UTSA, Mullins, for her career, is 2-0 with 13 strikeouts, three hits — all singles — and two walks throughout 8.2 innings in the circle. When the two teams faced off earlier this season, Mullins earned her eighth win on the year when she struck out nine, scattered three hits and issued two walks in 5.2 innings, before giving way to Karsen Pierce, who retired all four batters she faced over the game's final 1.1 innings.
