Wilson Claims All-American Status at NCAA Indoors

Wilson finished 6th in the weight throw with a school-record throw

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With a school record-setting throwing in her final attempt, Texas State's Alyssa Wilson cemented her status as an All-American in the weight throw on Friday at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships as the senior put up a 22.84m (74'-11.25") throw to finish sixth among the 16 competitors.

For the ninth time in her highly decorated career, Wilson earned First Team All-American honors with the top-six finish. It is her best finish in the weight throw at the NCAAs, beating out her ninth-place finish (20.98m) in the 2019 edition while with UCLA.

Wilson's result also gives Texas State three team points in the women's standings, the first points for the program at indoor nationals since 2018. Wilson is the lone Bobcat competing in the indoor championships this week.

After fouling on her first attempt, Wilson threw 22.39m in her second throw to get on the leaderboard. She then bested the mark with a 22.79m throw on her fourth attempt before closing out the event with the school-record mark.

Wilson is now a three-time indoor All-American, adding to her 2018 second team nod in the shot put and the 2019 honor in the weight throw.

This year's Sun Belt Women's Indoor Field Performer of the Year narrowly missed her personal record, a 22.98m throw set two years ago. Her previous best for this season was 22.48m set at the USATF Indoor Championships in late February.

Shey Taiwo of Ole Miss won the championship in the weight throw, putting up a facility record 25.55m throw in her last attempt. Four of the top-six finishers registered a personal or season best in the event on Friday.
