BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — At its first Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship meet under first-year director of track and field
John Frazier, the Texas State track and field program came away with a pair of second-place finishes as Arkansas State claimed both the men's and women's conference indoor championships.
The Bobcats did, however, earn 18 podium finishes throughout the two-day meet.
Dominick Yancy was the top male student-athlete performance during the meet as the junior sprinter set new conference indoor championship marks in the Men's 400m (46.89) and was part of the Bobcats' 4x400 relay team — along with
Donald Rolle,
Taahir Kelly, and
Brian West — that ran a meet-best 3:11.29.
Alyssa Wilson, competing in her first Sun Belt Indoor Championship meet, set conference marks in the Women's Shot Put (16.15m) and Women's Weight Throw (21.65m). The UCLA transfer finished tied with Coastal Carolina's Melissa Jefferson for the third-most points by a female student-athlete. Wilson's 20-point total, though, was the most by any female field student-athlete.
As part of the seven-event Men's Heptathlon,
Simon Thor etched his name into the conference record books as his 5.07m Men's Heptathlon Pole Vault jump broke the previous Sun Belt Indoor Championship meet record by 0.02m.
FROM DIRECTOR OF TRACK AND FIELD JOHN FRAZIER
"The driving force behind our success this weekend was a simple formula of hard work and dedication. Our staff and student-athletes have worked extremely hard this season and as a team we have shown our dedication and commitment to being the best. Our goals are always to win but this was a great start on that pathway.
"Dominick (Yancy) is an amazing talent. Both he and Coach (Trent) Edgerton are shining examples of what hard work, dedication and competitive spirt looks like. Coach Edgerton recognized Dominick's talent early on and together they worked on a plan, which lead to his record-breaking performances."
