SAN MARCOS, Texas – Two goals in a matter of seconds in the first half from South Alabama was the difference as Texas State fell 3-0 Thursday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Â
The result drops the Bobcats to 11-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the Sun Belt while the Jaguars are now 9-1-6 on the year and 5-0-3 in conference play.
Â
"This was a very competitive match. South Alabama is a very good and talented team that has players who can finish," said head coach
Steve Holeman. "I thought we competed well and fought hard. We will take some positives from this match moving forward."
Â
South Alabama nearly got on the board a little over seven minutes into the match when Imane Addi's shot was stopped by
Katelyn Chrisman. The sophomore was unable to control the ball and Rebecca Calderoni Martinez was there for a follow-up that Chrisman caught from point-blank range.
Â
Â
Off a corner kick late in the 23rd minute,
Kiara Gonzales got her head on the ball but was unable to direct on frame as it sailed wide of frame.
Â
The Jaguars netted their first goal midway through the 27th minute when Abby Jacobs sent a left-footed shot to the far post after pushing herself free from a Bobcat defender. Right at the kickoff, Morgan Cross crossed the midline early to win the ball from a Bobcat and sent a pass to Jasmine Greene. Her attempt hit off the right post and bounced in for a 2-0 advantage.
Â
TXST's lone shot attempt on goal in the first 45 minutes came off the right foot of
Avery Thies that went straight to the keeper.
Â
The visitor's added their final goal in the early part of the 53rd minute when Greene headed in a cross from Danielle Fuentes.
Â
A corner kick eight minutes later saw
Kiara Gonzales direct a headed ball toward goal but the goalie pushed the ball away for another corner try. The following try saw the Jaguar's keeper leap to get a hand on the ball and collide with her own player, but Gonzales got whistled for a foul instead to deny the Bobcats a look at an open goal.
Â
The final opportunity for Texas State came with almost four minutes left on the clock off. South Alabama wasn't able to clear out a corner kick and
Westyn Henderson sent in a ball that
Lily Erb knocked past the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, the freshman was a tad offsides to wipe away the tally.
Â
Gonzales had two of TXST's four shot attempts on the night. Chrisman made five saves and
Beth Agee played the final 18 minutes between the posts.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a trip to West Virginia to take on Marshall for the first time in program history. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday from Hoops Family Field and will be streamed on ESPN+.
