Goss Nets Ninth Goal of the Year Sunday Afternoon

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Midfielder Madi Goss scored her ninth goal of the season, tying her for the third most by a sophomore in Texas State history. However, the Bobcats would fall 4-1 to Marshall Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.

The setback drops TXST to 11-4-2 on the year and 5-3-1 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Thundering Herd are now 3-8-5 overall and 2-4-3 in conference play.

"Today belonged to Marshall. We fought hard but it wasn't enough," said head coach Steve Holeman. "We weren't great in the final third and they were exceptional. We will learn from this, regroup and prepare for the next one."

Marshall got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Kat Gonzalez nearly six minutes into the match as she shoved Avery Thies to the ground to win the ball prior to taking the long-distance shot.

In the early part of the 20th minute, Chloe Jones sent a short cross into the box that Zoe Junior was able to get her head on. The ball bounced to Madi Goss, who headed the ball just inside the right post to knot the score at 1-1.

A long ball forward saw Morgan White put a shot into the upper left corner to put Marshall back in the lead four minutes into the second half. Gonzalez would tally her second goal of the afternoon in the 61st minute and Luiza Travassos put back a bad clearance two minutes later to make it a three-goal advantage for the Herd.

The only other shot on goal for Texas State came in the 69th minute. Olivia Wright was able to get past a defender and unleashed a shot short that ended with the goalkeeper diving and pushing the ball out of play for a corner kick.

Junior was the lone Bobcat with multiple shot attempts on the day with three. Beth Agee started in goal and made five saves.

Next up for TXST is the regular season finale and senior night on Thursday. The Bobcats will host App State with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
