Texas State looks to wrangle up Mavericks this week

ARLINGTON, TX — The Texas State and UTA women's basketball programs are wasting little time in facing off on the hardwood as the two will tango at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday, Jan. 20 in College Park Center in Arlington.

The Bobcats and Mavericks will, then, turn around to play each other, again, on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. CT in San Marcos at Strahan Arena.

Both Thursday and Saturday's matchups will be streamed on ESPN+.

LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS
  • With Texas State's 18-point win at Georgia State on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, Bobcat women's basketball head coach Zenarae Antoine became just the 12th women's basketball head coach in Sun Belt Conference history to win 80-or-more conference games. Antoine, who is 80-70 all-time in Sun Belt contests, is the fourth active winningest head coach in league history in terms of conference wins. Little Rock's Joe Foley leads the way with 224 with Troy's Chanda Rigby second with 110. Louisiana's Garry Brodhead is ahead of Antoine with 85.
  • Following her career performances in Texas State's wins at Georgia Southern and Georgia State last week, Bobcat senior forward Da'Nasia Hood was named the Sun Belt Conference's Player of the Week for the second time in her career. Hood averaged 29.0 points on 77.4 percent shooting and brought down 9.5 rebounds a game in addition to 2.0 steals, 1.5 assists and 1.0 blocks per game during the two-game stretch last week.
  • Texas State senior guard Kennedy Taylor enters Thursday night's game at UTA sitting atop the Sun Belt Conference in total assists (102), assists per game (6.0), minutes played (570:23), steals (40) and steals per game (2.35). Taylor is one of just seven Division I women's basketball student-athletes to have been credited with 100-or-more assists at this point of the 2021-22 season. Taylor is just 23 back of Notre Dame's Olivia Miles for the top spot.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
  • Since beginning play at the College Park Center on February 1, 2012, UTA is 84-53 at home. Since the 2016-17 season, the Mavericks have won 37 of its last 44 home Sun Belt games and have not lost more than two conference games inside their home arena.
  • Katie Ferrell and Terryn Milton have combined for 769 career assists heading into Thursday night's contest. Ferrell is second in program history with 433 career assists, while Milton is sixth with 336.
  • Thursday night's game will be the first time the Mavericks will be playing at College Park Center since dropping to Troy, 59-48, on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022. During the month of January, UTA will have played just two home games — Troy, Texas State — after having a Jan. 6 contest against South Alabama canceled.
SERIES HISTORY
  • The Texas State and UTA women's basketball programs have one of the longest-running series history in Bobcat history. The two programs first met on Feb. 24, 2973, when Texas State earned a 51-25 victory. Since then, the Bobcats have gone on to claim a 41-36 lead in the all-time series history.
  • Under head coach Zenarae Antoine, Texas State is 11-11 dating back to her first meeting against the Mavericks — a 90-73 Bobcat win — on Jan. 28, 2012.
  • Last season, the two programs split the home-and-home meetings with Texas State winning, 66-45, in San Marcos on Friday, Feb. 12, 2021, before the Mavericks on, 51-43, in Arlington on Saturday, Feb. 13. The two teams also split the 2019-20 season's matchup with Texas State winning, 72-55, on Feb. 1, 2020, in San Marcos, before the Mavericks won, 69-49, on Feb. 22, 2020, in Arlington.
