Texas State earn No. 2 seed for 2021 Sun Belt Conference Championships

NEW ORLEANS, La. — On the heels of a spectacular final regular-season weekend that saw Texas State take all three games from UTA, the Bobcats also earned the No. 2 seed for next week's 2021 Sun Belt Conference Championship, the league announced Saturday evening.

Texas State (36-10, 17-6) was chosen to finish third in the conference's preseason, but concluded the 2021 regular season by holding the tiebreaker over Troy after taking the series from the Trojans last weekend.

The tiebreaker came into play Saturday after Troy (34-13, 17-6) split its two-game weekend series with South Alabama (26-17, 13-9).

"Today ended up being a really great day to be a Bobcat," said Texas State softball head coach Ricci Woodard. "I'm very proud of this group of young ladies and I'm looking forward to watching them down the stretch of this season."

Second-seeded Texas State will play the winner of a single-game elimination matchup between the seventh-seeded Georgia Southern Eagles and 10th-seeded Georgia State Panthers on Wednesday, May 12 at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles and Panthers will square off on Tuesday, May 11 at 1 p.m.

All tournament games will be played at the Troy Softball Complex in Troy, Ala., as the Trojans will play host for this year's festivities.  Every game of the conference tournament will the streamed on ESPN+.

Earlier this season, Texas State swept Georgia State (6-2, 9-0, 10-5) in a three-game series in Atlanta, Ga., on March 23-24. A month later, the Bobcats held Georgia Southern scoreless (7-0, 3-0, 1-0) for an entire weekend that resulted in TXST senior pitcher Meagan King being named the conference's pitcher of the week.
