Box Score WACO, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (11-15) fell 4-2 Tuesday night to Baylor (14-10) at Baylor Ballpark.
Taking the loss was
Zeke Wood (2-2) after he gave up three runs on four hits and walks while striking out six in 4.2 innings.
Reece Gould pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two.
Trevis Sundgren struck out a batter in an inning of work and
Austin Smith got the lone batter he faced to ground out.
Two hits apiece were recorded by
Bryce Bonner,
Cole Coffey and
Justin Thompson.
The Bears started out the game with a 2-RBI triple by Tre Richardson in the bottom of the first.
In the top of the second, Coffey hit a single over the leaping second baseman.
Jaxon Williams followed with a double to left center to put two in scoring position. A deep fly to right off the bat of
Ben McClain brought Coffey home to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Jose Gonzalez hit a 1-0 pitch to center that saw the outfielder dive but miss the ball, allowing the sophomore to reach third for his second triple of the season. A couple pitches later Bonner laced an RBI single to right to tie the game.
Richardson was plunked and advanced to third on a ground out to first in the fifth. A single to right by Antonio Valdez would put Baylor back in front 3-2.
The Bears extended their lead with a home run to start the sixth.
Thompson led off the eighth with a single to center. Bonner was walked and
Peyton Lewis was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. However, a grounder right to the third baseman started a double play to end the frame.
Next for the Bobcats is a Sun Belt Conference series against UT Arlington at Bobcat Ballpark. The series begins on Thursday at 6 p.m.
