Baseball Opens Sun Belt Play at Little Rock

SAN MARCOS, Texas – After 672 days, Texas State (8-10) plays a Sun Belt Conference game when it travels to take on Little Rock (6-7) this weekend at Gary Hogan Field. Both games on Friday and Saturday will start at 4 p.m. and Sunday's finale sees first pitch at 1 p.m.
 
The games will be streamed on ESPN+ with Patrick Walsh and Justin Farrar on the call. Live stats will also be available for the entire series.
 
PROBABLE STARTING PITCHERS
Friday: Zachary Leigh (0-3, 8.24 ERA) vs. Aaron Funk (0-2, 5.71 ERA)
Saturday: Cameron Bush (1-1, 4.76 ERA) vs. Hayden Arnold (1-2, 6.50 ERA)
Sunday: TBA vs. Jack DeCooman (0-1, 5.19 ERA)
 
LAST TIME OUT
Another offensive explosion for the Bobcats took place on Wednesday with a 16-5 run-rule victory in seven innings of Rice. TXST scored 12 runs in the fourth behind six hits, four hit-by-pitches, four walks and a sacrifice fly. Five players scored twice and four drove in at least two runs.
 
ABOUT TEXAS STATE
Justin Thompson was 2-for-2 against the Owls to give him 28 hits on the season, tied for the fifth most in the country. He also leads the Sun Belt with 21 RBI and is second with a .418 batting average. Will Hollis is hitting .302 with a team-high 14 runs scored, 13 walks and four home runs.
 
Other regulars in the lineup that are batting over .300 are Ben McClain (.313) and Tucker Redden (.303).
 
Zachary Leigh is scheduled to start on Friday. The senior right-hander has yet to earn a win this season (0-3) while striking out a team-high 24 in 19.2 innings. Cameron Bush will make his second straight Saturday start. He is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 17 innings of work. Sunday's start has yet to be announced.
 
ABOUT LITTLE ROCK
Little Rock is coming off a weekend series at Auburn. The Trojans were shutout in the first two games of the series before winning the finale 12-6. After this weekend, LR will only play one home game (Mar. 30 vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff) until Apr. 9 against South Alabama.
 
Jorden Hussein leads the Trojans with a .429 batting average while scoring eight runs. John Michael Russ comes in hitting .404 with a team-high 19 hits. The catcher has scored seven times and driven in four runs.
 
Tyler Williams paces LR with 13 RBI and Noah Dickerson has plated 10 while scoring a team best nine runs. Also batting over .300 on the season are Kobe Barnum (.310), Nathan Lyons (.349) and Williams (.306).
 
A weekend rotation of Aaron Funk (0-2, 5.71 ERA, 16 K), Hayden Arnold (1-2, 6.50 ERA, 15 K) and Jack DeCooman (0-1, 5.19 ERA, 10 K) will be used for the fourth consecutive weekend.
 
SERIES VS. THE OWLS
Little Rock leads the all-time series over Texas State 13-7. The last meeting was a series May 10-12, 2019 in Little Rock. The Trojans won the first two games before the Bobcats took the series finale 13-9.
 
The Bobcats are 3-6 when playing in the state capital of Arkansas. The three previous series at Little Rock have seen TXST go 1-2 each time.
