Bobcats 2021 volleyball schedule announced

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State's head volleyball coach Sean Huiet has released the spring 2021 schedule Monday morning.

In preparation for the NCAA Tournament this upcoming April, the Bobcats will have a total of 14 matches this spring, including matches against three teams listed in the AVCA Division I Top 25 poll and two teams who are currently ranked in the top 10. Featured in this spring's schedule will be 10 matches against Big 12 opponents, three matches against Conference USA teams, and one match against an American Athletic Conference member.

The first six matches of the spring will be on the road, beginning with a 7 p.m. match UTSA on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at the UTSA Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. They will then face North Texas at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18 at the North Texas Volleyball Center in Denton, Texas, and challenge TCU at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Bobcats will leave Texas once this spring when they take on Kansas State (currently receiving 26 votes) at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4 at the Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kan., and Kansas at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 5 at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena in Lawrence, Kan. Texas State will round out its six-match road trip with the first match against No. 2 Texas at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 8 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.

Following the big match in the state's capital, the Bobcats will host No. 6 Baylor in their home opener at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10 at Strahan Arena. The Cats will have nearly a week off from competition before facing No. 2 Texas again at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16 at Strahan Arena, and conclude a three-match homestand for a second match vs. TCU at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 18 at Strahan Arena.

TXST will hit the road again for a 6 p.m. match against Houston at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 20 at the Fertitta Center in Houston, Texas before returning home for three consecutive home matches to conclude the team's home schedule. The first will be a rematch against North Texas at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, followed by back-to-back matches against Texas Tech at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 26 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 27 at Strahan Arena.

The regular season for the spring will conclude at No. 6 Baylor on Thursday, April 1 at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.
"Although it's different than most spring schedules, I am excited for the schedule we were able to put together," said Coach Huiet. "This group talks about the Sweet 16 and doing something Texas State has never done so we bulked up the spring season to get ready for the NCAA Tournament. With the Big 12 playing its full conference schedule like we did this past fall, we were able to get a lot of matches with them.  I am thrilled we can play six more home games for our fans with some high-level competition coming to Strahan Arena."

Texas State has earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament after securing its third consecutive Sun Belt Conference Tournament title last fall. Overall, the Bobcats ended the fall season 24-2, including a 15-1 mark in Sun Belt Conference play, and will enter the spring on a four-match winning streak.

For the third straight season, junior setter Emily DeWalt was named the Sun Belt Conference Setter of the Year and was selected to the 2020 All-Sun Belt First Team. Joining DeWalt on the first-team is junior outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald, who made her third overall All-Sun Belt team and her second time being listed on the first-team (2018). Senior middle blocker Tyeranee Scott became a two-time All-Sun Belt selection after being tabbed to the 2020 All-Sun Belt First Team and was named the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Performer. Finally, sophomore outside hitter Lauren Teske appeared on the 2020 All-Sun Belt Second Team to round out the top performers from last fall.
