Texas State to make first trip to Lubbock since 2017

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Texas State women's basketball program will look to continue its winning ways to start the 2021-22 season when the Bobcats travel to Lubbock, Texas to play Texas Tech on Monday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

It'll be the first meeting between the two programs since Texas State knocked off Texas Tech, 87-70, in Lubbock on Nov. 12, 2017 behind Taeler Deer's 44-points on 17-of-27 shooting.

LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS
  • Last time out, the Texas State defense forced 30 turnovers in its win at UTSA on Thursday, Nov. 18. It marked the most turnovers by a Bobcat defense in a game since forcing 32 against Texas Lutheran on Nov. 5, 2019.
  • The last time Texas State played at Texas Tech, Taeler Deer fell three points shy of tying the program's single-game record for most points in a contest when the eventual conference player of the year went for 44 points on 17-of-27 shooting, including five 3-pointers and five three throws, in 39 minutes of game action. Deer, who is second on the program's career assist list, also dished out a team-high eight assists against the Red Raiders.
  • Against then-No. 7 Baylor earlier this season, Texas State senior guard Kennedy Taylor, who travels to Lubbock third on the Texas State women's basketball career assist list with 413, was credited with a season-high nine assists when the Bobcats played at its lone other Big XII Conference opponent this month.
SCOUTING THE RED RAIDERS
  • Texas Tech, under first-year head coach Krista Gerlich, enters the contest Monday night with a 3-0 start to the 2021-22 season. The Red Raiders have knocked off Southeastern Louisiana (67-45), Weber State (62-44) and Lamar (72-68). It's the best start to a season for Texas Tech since opening up the 2019-20 season 11-0.
  • Freshman guard Rhyle McKinney will enter Monday night's game with a perfect 100 percent shooting percentage from the free throw line to start her Texas Tech playing career. McKinney, who began her career at SMU and played six games before opting out, knocked down all four free throw attempts against Southeastern Louisiana, then went 8 for 8 from the line against Weber State. McKinney is one of 33 Division I women's basketball student-athletes to have yet to miss a free throw this season.
  • Texas Tech is led by senior guard Vivian Gray, who was tabbed to the Jersey Mike's Naismith Awards Watch List on Nov. 12, 2021. The list is comprised of 50 student-athletes as Gray was one of eight that were represented from the Big XII. Gray finished the 2020-21 campaign fourth in the conference in scoring (19.8 points per game), eighth in rebounding (8.2), 10th in field goal percentage (.438) and fifth in blocked shots (1.6). Gray was the only Power Five student-athlete in the nation to average over 19 points, eight rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last season.
SERIES HISTORY
