Texas State looking for another conference win when Georgia Southern comes to town

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Texas State football program will look to mark its most wins in Sun Belt Conference action in a single season since 2014 when the Bobcats play host to Georgia Southern on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m.

The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Brant Freeman and Stephen Foster on the call with Koral Riggs on the sidelines as the in-game reporter. On the airwaves, Clint Shields and Geff Gandy can be heard describing the game's action on KTSW (89.9 FM in San Marcos) and the Varsity Network app.

LOOKING AT THE BOBCATS

Since taking over starting quarterback duties two weeks ago at Louisiana, Tyler Vitt has completed 22-of-44 passes for 304 yards and touchdown. He's also been the team's leading rushing during the two-game span with 131 net rushing yards — 42 yards more than the next closest Bobcat student-athlete — on 21 attempts.

Earlier this week, Vitt was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his Texas State playing career. The quarterback became the seventh different Bobcat student-athlete under head coach Jake Spavital to earn a weekly conference honor. He's the first offensive player of the week since fellow quarterback Brady McBride picked up the honor after beating Arkansas State last season.

Following his career-best 14-tackle performance in last Saturday's win over ULM, senior linebacker Markeveon Coleman is now seventh in the Sun Belt Conference with 7.2 tackles per game. Coleman's tackles per game clip ranks him 111st in the nation — among 500 Division I FBS student-athlete — in tackles per game.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

Twelve different Georgia Southern student-athletes have at least two rushing yards so far this season. Logan Wright leads the way with 689 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 110 attempts. Wright is second in the conference in rushing yards behind App State's Nate Noel (889). Wright is also second in the conference in rushing yards per carry at 6.26.

Like ULM a week ago, Georgia Southern is second in the conference in fewest penalty yards with 376 and fewest penalty yards per game at 41.78.

Coming into the weekend, Georgia Southern's field goal unit has made 10 of 11 field goal attempts this season. Alex Raynor is second in the conference with an 87.5 percent conversion rate on field goal attempts this season.

SERIES HISTORY

Texas State is looking to rebound from its two-point loss (40-38) in Statesboro, Ga., on Nov. 14, 2020. The Bobcats scored with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter to make it a two-point contest, but Georgia Southern converted two third-down plays to drain the remaining time in the game.

Saturday's contest will make just the third time the two football programs have met in San Marcos while both members of the Sun Belt Conference and first time since the Eagles left with a two-point win on Nov. 3, 2018.

Texas State and Georgia Southern first met on the gridiron on Nov. 26, 2005, in San Marcos during the FCS playoffs. The Bobcats won, 50-35, for its only win in the series history.
