2022 Baseball Signing Class Announced

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State head baseball coach Steven Trout announced the signing of 13 student-athletes for the 2022 Class, which consists of 10 high school seniors and three junior college transfers.

Arriving in San Marcos for the 2023 season will be Collin Coker, Colby Diaz, Rashawn Galloway, Coldon Kiser, Miguel Luevano, Chase Mora, Adrian Najar, Brian Panneton, Davis Powell, Sam Peterson, Jack Stroud, Kameron Weil and Mark Zapata.

"What an exciting day to sign this 2022 recruiting class. Each guy in this class brings something special to the table and has the talent to help us win championships in their time in San Marcos," said Trout. "A huge thank you and congrats goes out to my staff on all the hard work and time spent putting this class together. Josh Blakley and Chad Massengale worked tirelessly to build these relationships with each guy and we are excited to welcome them to the Bobcat Family."

Collin Coker | OF | R/R | 6-2 | 200
Sweeny, Texas | Sweeny HS
Coker will graduate from Sweeny High School and plays in the outfield. As a junior, he hit .429 with a 1.197 OPS, 12 doubles and three triples. He also drove in 39 runs, scored 36 times and swiped 15 bases. His performance saw him be a TSWA 4A All-State Honorable Mention selection and All-District 25-4A First Team honoree.

As a freshman, Coker went 3-for-6 in the state tournament and helped the Bulldogs finish as runner-up. He is also a member of the football team and earned All-District 25-4A First Team accolades as a linebacker and wide receiver.

Coker choose Texas State over Rice, Sam Houston, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Wichita State.

Blakley on Coker: "Collin is a really physical guy. We offered him a couple of summers ago when he continually showed the ability to go big fly to the opposite field. He is athletic enough to play shortstop for his high school team but will move to the outfield when he comes to Texas State. Collin has a great swing and should hit balls a long way during his Bobcat career."

Colby Diaz | RHP/INF | R/R | 6-0 | 195
Leander, Texas | Rouse HS
Diaz will come to San Marcos after graduating from Rouse High School. In his lone appearance on the rubber in 2021 due to an injury suffered in the Fall, he allowed one hit and struck out 10 in 6.1 innings to earn the win over Dripping Springs to help send the Raiders to the UIL 5A State Tournament. He also led the team with seven home runs while starting at third base.

His performance at third base and the plate saw him be a TSWA 5A All-State Honorable Mention selection and pick up All-District 25-5A Second Team accolades.

Blakley on Diaz: "Colby is a grinder on the baseball field. His competitiveness was made clear when he entered a playoff game, before he was cleared to pitch with an injury, and went six innings out of the bullpen for the win. Colby possesses an electric breaking ball and will combo the pitch with an 89-91 mph fastball. The sky is the limit for him."

Rashawn Galloway | C | R/R | 6-0 | 215
Boerne, Texas | Boerne HS
A three-sport athlete out of Boerne High School, Galloway is a three-time academic all-district honoree behind the plate. He was picked to the TSWA 4A All-State third team and picked up his third straight all-district first team accolade after batting .425, striking out only five times and not allowing a stolen base.

On the gridiron, Galloway is the Greyhounds all-time leader with 7,841 passing yards and counting. He was a TSWA 4A All-State honorable mention selection and picked up District 14-4A Offensive MVP in 2020. The future Bobcat is also a three-time all-district pick on the hardwood.

Galloway choose Texas State over offers from Baylor, Incarnate Word, Louisiana, TCU and Texas A&M.

Blakley on Galloway: "Rashawn is a big-time dude. I could watch him hit baseballs all day long. He will graduate as the leading passer in Boerne football history and is one of the best players in his classification in both football and baseball. The arm strength and power in the bat are the real deal. Expect Rashawn to be a future mainstay in the Bobcat lineup."

Coldon Kiser | OF | R/R | 5-10 | 175
Lubbock, Texas | Frenship HS
Kiser will graduate from Frenship High School where he was an All-State First Team selection by both the THSBCA and TSWA as an outfielder in 2021. He batted .464 with 14 doubles, five home runs and four triples. The soon to be Bobcat finished the season with 41 RBI and scored 33 runs while posting a .523 on-base percentage and a 1.323 OPS. His performance also earned him All-District 2-6A First Team and District 2-6A Offensive MVP accolades.

Kiser selected Texas State over offers from Dartmouth, Harvard, Houston, Kansas State, Louisiana, San Diego, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech, UTSA and Wichita State.

Blakley on Kiser: "Coldon can flat get the barrel to the baseball. We recruited him overt the COVID shutdown when he legitimately got three hits every game for an entire summer. He works hard at his game and has recently turned himself into an elite runner. Coldon is a top of the order bat that will have a huge impact on our program."

Miguel Luevano | INF | R/R | 5-10 | 180
Corsicana, Texas | Corsicana HS
Luevano is an infielder and will graduate from Corsicana High School. He helped lead the Tigers to a 27-12 record and advance to the regional semifinals in 2021. Luevano played summer select ball for BPA under the direction of Jared Sandler.

Blakley on Luevano: "Mikey is a defensive wizard and consistently puts together quality at bats. Coming from a quality high school program with a legendary coach in Heath Autrey, he defines the term ball player and takes great pride in his ability. We expect Mikey to lock down one of our infield spots in the near future."

Chase Mora | INF/RHP | R/R | 6-1 | 160
Tomball, Texas | Tomball HS
Mora is an infielder from Tomball, Texas and was selected to the All-District 15-6A First Team in 2021. This past Spring, he hit .300 with nine doubles, two home runs and one triples. He also drove in 18 runs, scored 17 times and posted a .364 on-base percentage. On the mound, Mora was 6-0 with a 2.23 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 28.2 innings. He was selected to play in the 2021 Texas Scouts Association All-State Game.

In the shortened 2020 season, Mora batted .385 with a double, a homer, three RBI and scored five runs. He also struck out seven in seven innings of work, did not allow a run and posted a 1-1 record.

The future Bobcat choose Texas State over Baylor, Houston, Incarnate Word, Kansas State, Rice, Sam Houston, Texas and Wichita State.

Blakley on Mora: "Chase is an athletic dude! He is a true two-way player, who has a chance to make an impact right away at either spot. I couldn't be more impressed by Chase's development over the past year. He is low 90s on the bump, mid 90s across the diamond and his hit tool is better every time I watch him. Look for Chase to make an impact right away for the Bobcats."

Adrian Najar | RHP | R/R | 5-10 | 183
Grand Prairie, Texas | South Grande Prairie HS
Najar is a right-handed pitcher from Grand Prairie, Texas. He was an All-District 8-6A Second Team honoree his freshman year. Last season, he helped South Grande Prairie High school go 24-10 and reach the area round of the UIL 6A Playoffs.

The future Bobcat choose Texas State over interest from Army West Point, Dallas Baptist, Houston, Incarnate Word, Kansas State and UTSA.

Blakley on Najar: "Adrian is a guy who has won games his entire career. His velocity made a huge jump the summer before his junior year, and he began consistently throwing in the low 90s. An unfortunate injury put a hiccup in his junior season, but his rehab is going great and he will be back on the mound in a couple of weeks. Adrian is a stud and we can't wait to have him healthy and wearing the marron and gold."

Brian Panneton | RHP | R/R | 6-0 | 210
Tomball, Texas | Tomball Memorial HS
A right-hander pitcher out of Tomball Memorial High School, Panneton was an All-District 15-6A First Team and Academic All-District 15-6A this past Spring. He posted a 6-3 record with a 1.62 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 60.2 innings. The future Bobcat twirled two shutout victories in the first two rounds of the playoffs as well.

Over the Summer and Fall for Texas Twelve Marron club team, Panneton allowed just one earned run in 43.2 innings and struck out 50. He also threw a perfect game in the Perfect Game WWBA South Qualifier semifinal to earn the tournament's Most Valuable Pitcher award.

Panneton also played basketball his freshman and sophomore years for the Wildcats. He is a four-year member of the school's marching band playing the snare drum.

Blakley on Panneton: "Brian is an absolute winner. Every time I see him, he pitches against the best team in the tournament and he shuts them down. Possessing two different breaking balls with plus movement and fell, he breezes through opposing lineups. I can't wait to get Brian on campus and see him carve up opposing lineups."

Davis Powell | INF | R/R | 5-10 | 180
Lufkin, Texas | Lufkin HS | Grayson College
Powell is a middle infielder that has hit .388 in his time at Grayson College. Last season saw him bat .391 with seven doubles, four triples, two home runs, 29 RBI and 26 runs scored in 33 games. In the COVID shortened 2020 campaign, he was 12-for-32 (.375) with three doubles and seven RBI at the plate.

As a senior at Lufkin High School, Powell was selected to the THSBCA 5A All-State Second Team and TSWA 5A All-State Third Team. He also played in the 46 annual THSBCA All-State Game.

Powell choose Texas State over offers from Louisiana, Oklahoma and Wichita State.

Blakley on Powell: "Davis is one of the purest baseball players I have seen. He does everything really well. The more I went to the park to watch, the more I was impressed by his ability to handle the bat and play defense at shortstop. I expect Davis to make an immediate impact in the middle of the field and hit in the top third of the lineup."

Sam Peterson | RHP | R/R | 6-5 | 195
Lindale, Texas | Lindale HS
A 6-foot, 5-inch right-handed pitcher, Peterson was an All-District 16-4A Section Team pick this past season. He is also the quarterback on the football team where he led Lindale to the UIL 4A Division 1 title game. The future Bobcat is a two-time all-district selection at quarterback and earned first team all-district accolades a punter.

Peterson played summer ball for Five Star Performance National under the direction of Nico Moran. He recorded 15 and 12 strikeouts in two games.

Blakley on Peterson: "Sam is the second quarterback commit in the 2022 Class. Another long athletic guy, he can really sling the baseball. Sam possesses a wipeout curveball and has the frame to really pack on the pounds when he settles in to playing baseball year-round. I can't wait to get him in a Bobcat uniform and start tapping into some of his projection. I think Sam will be a special arm in the maroon and gold."

Jack Stroud | LHP | L/L | 6-0 | 200
Amarillo, Texas | IMG Academy | Florida Atlantic | Weatherford College
Stroud will arrive in San Marcos after a year at Weatherford College. He spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons pitching for Florida Atlantic. The left-hander pitcher made his collegiate debut against No. 9 Florida State on Feb. 29, 2020. The 2021 campaign saw him throw 5.1 innings over six appearances with a 5.06 ERA and five strikeouts.

This past summer Stroud pitched for the Amarillo Sod Squad of the Texas Collegiate League. He went 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 10.1 innings and struck out 19 over six appearances including one start.

The lefty played for the national championship winning IMG Academy and coach Kason Gabbard. As a senior, Stroud was selected as IMG Top Pitcher of the Year in which he posted a 1.20 ERA.

Stroud choose Texas State over offers from Abilene Christian, New Mexico and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Blakley on Stroud: "Jack is a guy I have liked for a long time. He led the Texas Collegiate League in strikeouts last summer and has continued that success this Fall at Weatherford College. Possessing a low-to-mid 90s fastball from the left side, Jack can punch out hitters at an impressive rate. We expect him to make an immediate impact on our weekend rotation."

Kameron Weil | OF | L/R | 5-9 | 170
Arlington, Texas | Lamar HS | Weatherford College
Weil will arrive in San Marcos after playing two years at Weatherford College. As a freshman, he hit .306 with 10 doubles, three doubles and one home run. He scored 51 times and drove in 22 runs. The future Bobcat was 26-for-29 stealing bases while posting a .450 on-base percentage.

The outfielder graduated from Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas. Weil earned district MVP honors, was selected as the district's Freshman of the Year in 2017 and earned all-district first team academic accolade.

Weil selected Texas State over offers from Coastal Carolina, Lamar, Tarleton State and UTSA.

Blakley on Weil: "Kameron plays the game with his hair on fire. I have literally been a fan of his since June 2018. I'm pretty fired up to finally get him on the team. Kameron understands how to hit and is a force to be reckoned with when he gets to first base. As possibly the best runner in junior college baseball in the state of Texas, he should bring some electricity to the Bobcat's lineup in 2023.

Mark Zapata | LHP | L/L | 6-4 | 190
Pearland, Texas | Pearland HS
A left-handed pitcher, Zapata will arrive in San Marcos after graduating from Pearland High School. Last season saw him be selected to the All-District 23-6A Second Team after striking out 76. He helped lead the Oilers to a 27-8 record and reach the regional semifinals.

This past summer saw Zapata pitch in the Texas Scout Association All-Star Game. He was also selected as Lone Star Preps as one of the top left-hander hurlers in the state of Texas for the 2022 Class.

Zapata choose Texas State over offers from Abilene Christian, Houston, Houston Baptist, Sam Houston, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV.

Blakley on Zapata: "Mark has a chance to be really special on the mound. Already topping at 90 mph from the left side, he possesses a three-pitch mix that can keep high-level hitters off balance. With a lanky frame that has plenty of room to fill out, I believe Mark's best days are definitely ahead of him. Mark is a future weekend rotation guy for the Bobcats."
