SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas State softball team split its home fall finale as it defeated Navarro College, 3-2, but fell to UTSA in the second game, 3-2. Bailee Carter shined at the plate and went 5-for-6 with a walk and two runs scored. The Bobcats won their sixth straight game in fall action over Navarro, but took their first loss to the Roadrunners in game two.
Game 1: Texas State 3, Navarro College 2
ArieAnn Bell jolted a homerun to right field in the first inning to begin the afternoon for Texas State and gave the home squad a 2-0 lead. The two teams did not score again until the top of the sixth inning when Navarro tied the game in the top half of the stanza on a bloop two-RBI single which landed behind the first base bag in shallow right field.
Tara Oltmann led off the bottom of the sixth inning and smacked a double and advanced to third on a groundout with two outs. Christiana McDowell drew a walk and the Navarro catcher attempted a snap throw but launched the ball past the third baseman to allow Oltmann to cross the plate as the go-ahead run.
Tori McCann tossed the first four scoreless innings for the Bobcats and allowed just one hit and struck out three. Brooke Blackwell threw two innings and surrendered two runs and four hits. Cassie Valdez entered to pitch the seventh inning and worked a quick 1-2-3 frame with two punchouts.
Game 2: UTSA 3, Texas State 2
The Bobcats scored in the first inning for the second straight game to claim an early 2-0 lead. Carter singled and McDowell doubled to center to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Sara Vanderford lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Carter, and Bell registered her third RBI of the day with a line drive single to center that brought home McDowell from second.
The Roadrunners cut the deficit in half on a one out solo homer in the top of the third to right.
Bell led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to right and Oltmann reached on an error by the third baseman to put two in scoring position with one out. However, TXST could not score and struck out and grounded out to end the side.
UTSA plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning on an error and a bases loaded walk to take a 3-2 lead.
Carter registered her fifth hit of the day on an infield single to short in the bottom of the seventh inning, but was left on first to end the game.
Meagan King earned the start and worked four innings allowing one earned run, four hits and three walks while striking out three. Dalilah Barrera threw the last three innings and tallied three strikeouts.
