SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State softball team handled Incarnate Word by a score of 8-0 in a nine-inning contest at Bobcat Softball Stadium on Friday evening.
In a game with plenty of offensive firepower, junior catcher
Haleigh Davis led the way for the Bobcats. She reached safely in two of her three trips to the plate and added a trio of runs batted in. Senior outfielder
Mari Cranek added two RBI and collected one hit.
Texas State wasted little time getting the scoring started. The Bobcats plated five runs in the home half of the second inning. Junior infielder
Hailey MacKay reached base on a Cardinal error and came around to third base on a double from sophomore infielder
ArieAnn Bell. Davis brought both runners home on a single up the middle.
Sophomore outfielder
Brianna Sannem continued the inning with a bunt single. Davis came around to score the third run of the game on a single by freshman Jordyn Smith. Cranek closed out the scoring in the second with a two-run triple.
Freshman outfielder Molly Damiani opened the fourth inning with an infield single and promptly stole second. She advanced to third on an infield single off the bat of sophomore infielder
Tara Oltmann. Damiani came around to score on an error from the UIW infield to bring the score to 6-0.
In the next frame, Davis cashed in another run to give the Bobcats a touchdown advantage. She led off the inning with a solo home run to deep left center.
Finally, in the ninth inning, MacKay drew a walk and was pulled in favor of freshman pinch runner Cat Crenek. The Cypress, Texas-native stole second base before coming around to score on an RBI single up the middle from freshman outfielder Samara Lagway.
In the circle, three Bobcat pitchers were used. Each pitcher recorded three shutout frames. Junior right-hander Dalilah Barrera earned the start. Pudge faced one-over the minimum as she did not allow a hit, walk or run in the start. The lone base runner reached vis an error. Barrera struck out four Cardinal batters.
Senior right-hander
Krista Jacobs pitched the next three innings of the game. She allowed three hits, a walk and hit one batter, but was able to keep UIW off the scoreboard.
Freshman right-hander
Meagan King came into the game to pitch the final nine outs. She shut the door on the Cardinals, allowing just one hit and striking out five batters.
Texas State will be at home for the final time in the fall schedule with a tilt against Temple College at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 at Bobcat Softball Stadium. The Bobcats will close out the fall slate on Nov. 9 in Austin against the Texas Longhorns. All home games are open to the public, and admission for the fall schedule will be free.
