ARLINGTON, Texas – With the final outcome being decided by a third-set tiebreaker in the final singles match of the day, the Texas State women's tennis team edged Arkansas State, 4-3, at the UTA Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The victory was Texas State's second straight victory against a Sun Belt Conference team on a neutral court.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning a pair of doubles matches to capture the doubles point. First,
Eva Dench and
Alex Jones teamed up to defeat Victoria Pisani and Sabina Jeresic in the top-seeded match. Then,
Ana Perez and
Julia Navajo-Melendez combined to win a 6-3 decision over Shannon O'Brien and Tori Roberts in the No. 2 match.
Pippa Carr and
Joy Chia Ming Ming were leading the No. 3 match by a score of 4-3 when it was halted after the Bobcats won the team point.
Texas State extended its lead to 3-0 when Navajo-Melendez and Perez won their singles matches in straight sets. First, Navajo-Melendez beat Pisani by a score of 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 match. Perez also defeated O'Brien by a score of 6-4, 7-6 after winning the second set tiebreaker, 7-3, in the No. 3 match.
Arkansas State came back to tie the score at 3-3 with three victories in singles matches as Jones, Dench and Chia Ming Ming all fell in three sets. First, Allison Quammen beat Jones by a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 6 match. Dench also suffered a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 setback in the No. 1 match against Julie Gauguery and Chia Ming Ming dropped a 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 decision in the No. 5 singles match.
The final match between Carr and Jeresic featured each player capturing a set after winning a tiebreaker. Jeresic won the first set after winning the tiebreaker by a score of 8-6. Carr came back to win the second set by a score of 6-2 and won the match-deciding third-set by a score of 7-6 after winning the second tiebreaker, 7-3.
With the victory, Texas State enters their final road match against UTA on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. The Bobcats close out the regular season with their final home match of the season against UT Rio Grande Valley at the Bobcats Tennis Complex beginning at 11 a.m. The Bobcats play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on April 20-23 in New Orleans.
