SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 6-1 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon. The victory improves Texas State's overall record to 7-10 and gives the Bobcats a 5-4 record in home matches this season.
Texas State jumped out to an early 1-0 after winning a doubles match by forfeit and a three-set victory in the No. 2 doubles match to capture the team point.
The forfeit came in the No. 3 doubles match with
Julia Navajo-Melendez and
Joy Chia Ming Ming being credited with a victory because UTRGV had only five players.
UTRGV tied the score a 1-1 after winning the top seeded doubles match when Marine Darzyan and Dominique Ibarra won a 6-2 decision against
Eva Dench and
Alex Jones.
Texas State captured the doubles point when
Pippa Carr and
Ana Perez won a tie breaker by a score of 7-4 to capture a 7-6 victory over Dominique Esparza and Anastasia Belyaeva, in the No. 2 match.
Texas State took a 3-0 lead after Jones was credited with a victory by forfeit in the No. 6 singles match and Carr won her No. 2 singles battle in straight sets. Playing in her final home match on "Senior Day", Carr won the first set by a score of 6-2, and came back to win the second set by the same score.
UTRGV was able to get on the scoreboard when Cloe Leclere defeated
Joy Chia Ming Ming in the No. 5 match by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Julia Navajo-Melendez clinched the victory when she won her No. 4 match for Texas State's fourth team point. Navajo-Melendez won the match in straight sets after winning the first set by a score of 6-4 and coming back to win the second set, 6-3.
The Bobcats won the final two matches in three sets when
Ana Perez posted her 12th singles victory of the season with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 win over Ibarra in the No. 3 singles match. The top-seeded match saw senior
Eva Dench celebrate "Senior Day" with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Anastasia Belyaeva.
The Bobcats will travel to New Orleans on April 20-23 when they play in the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championships at the City Park Tennis Center.
