SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision against I-35 rival UTSA on Tuesday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Texas State won two, three doubles matches to capture the team point. Texas State's first victory came in the No. 2 doubles match where
Pippa Carr and
Ana Perez improved their record to 4-1 this spring when they beat Denisa Ibrahimovic and Sonia Madronal Medina by a score of 6-2. In the No. 3 match, UTSA evened the score when
Julia Navajo-Melendez and
Joy Chia Ming Ming fell 6-4 against Lina Hallgren and Charleen Tiwari.
The deciding point came on the No. 1 court as
Eva Dench and
Alex Jones also improved their record to 4-1 this spring with a 7-5 victory over Marium Rosell Canudas and Kylee Kato.
UTSA came back to clinch the victory when the Roadrunners won four straight singles matches. First, Dench suffered a 6-2, 6-1 against No. 51-ranked Rosell Canudas, who improved her record to 9-0 this spring.
Navajo-Melendez dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision against Halgren on the No. 3 court and Carr fell 6-4, 6-1 versus Ibrahimovic in the No. 2 match and
Yadira Rubio suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss against Kato.
Texas State won the final two matches of the day when
Joy Chia Ming Ming won a three-set decision over Tiwari by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 and Perez won a tiebreaker in the first set and a super tiebreaker in the third set to claim a 7-6 (4), 5-7, 1-0 (10-4) win over Laura Cabrera.
The victory improves UTSA's record to 5-4 this spring, while Texas State fell to 3-4 this season. The Bobcats travel to Houston on Saturday to play No. 23-ranked Rice at 10 a.m. at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
