SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State women's tennis team suffered their third straight loss when Louisiana Tech won five of the six singles matches en route to a 5-1 victory over the Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Center.
Texas State's lone victory came in the No. 4 singles match where
Ana Perez won a straight-set decision over Marta Sramkova. Perez jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and went on to win the first set by a score 6-2. The second set was tied a 6-6 when Perez won a tiebreaker that featured a pair of 3-0 runs by each player. Perez used the first run to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Sramkova answered with a run of her own to tie the score at 3-3 before Perez scored the final four straight points in the match to win the tiebreaker, 7-3.
Louisiana Tech jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when
Pippa Carr suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss against Nadja Manjon on the No. 2 court and
Joy Chia Ming Ming lost a 6-4, 6-0 decision in her No. 5 match against Alba Escalona Penny. After Perez pulled the Bobcats to within one with her victory, the Lady Techsters extended their lead to 3-1 after
Eva Dench dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision against Jazmin Britos in the No. 1 singles match.
The final two matches of the day were decided in three sets. In the No. 6 match,
Yadira Rubio dropped the first set against Haley Ballinger by a score of 6-4 before coming back to win the second set, 6-0. In the final set, both players fought to a 4-4 tie, before Ballinger won the final two points to capture the third set 6-4.
The final match of the day came on the No. 3 court where
Julia Navajo-Melendez dropped the first set against Sonia Chen by a score of 6-3. Navajo-Melendez came back to win the second set 7-6 after winning a 7-2 tiebreaker. However, Chen won the match after winning the third set by a score of 6-3.
Sunday's loss drops Texas State's record to 2-3. The Bobcats look to get back on the winning track when the they host Incarnate Word on Feb. 24 at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
