SPRING KLEIN, Texas – The Texas State softball team opened up the fall ball schedule with a pair of impressive victories in the College Classic just outside of Houston early on Saturday afternoon.  In game one, the Bobcats took down Houston, 4-2.  Game two saw Texas State dominate Galveston Community College, 10-0.

Senior pitcher Randi Rupp started game one in the circle, spinning five scoreless innings.  Rupp gave up five hits through five frames, never facing any real trouble while striking out eight Cougar batters.  Freshman Maria Flores took over in the sixth, surrendering two runs on two hits.  Another freshman, McKenna Fryar entered in the seventh to close the door, pitching a scoreless inning.

Offensively, Ariel Ortiz led the way with a three-run shot.  Mari Crenek added to the Bobcat lead with a fielder's choice RBI.

In the back half of the double-header, Fryar took the circle to start for Texas State.  The freshman spun three strong innings, giving up just one hit.  Her three scoreless frames included four punch-outs.  Once again, a freshman was called upon to close out the game.  Meagan King came in for the final two innings, surrendering just two hits while striking out one batter.  The freshman tandem managed five shutout frames.

The team exploded for 10 runs in just five frames.  ArieAnne Bell was tremendous in the game, going 2-for-3.  The freshman outfielder crushed a three-run home run.  Bell finished the game with four runs batted in. Bailee Carter added an RBI on top of her 2-for-2 night.  She also drew a walk in the contest. Jaelyn Young, a senior catcher, drove in a pair of runs in a 1-for-2 game.  Young drew a walk in one of her three at-bats.  Cranek was again in the middle of the offensive attack, going 1-for-3, drawing a walk and driving in a run.  Freshman infielder Tara Oltmann was perfect from the plate, going 2-for-2 on the afternoon.

The Bobcats will be back in action next weekend as hosts of the Texas State Round Robin.  Game one will feature a clash with Temple College at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning and will be followed by a game against Texas A&M International at 3 p.m. at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
