TROY, Ala., – Despite trailing 5-0 after the first two innings, Texas State softball rallied back for a statement 11-7 win over the Troy Trojans on Friday night.
Highlighting the night was a 3-3 night at the plate for
Aiyana Coleman who had a 3 RBI home run in her three hits in addition to her two walks.
Keely Williams also had three hits, while
Karmyn Bass had two, one of which was her first home run of the year late in the game to extend the Bobcats' lead.Â
Texas State tallied 16 hits from eight different batters with six walks as it worked its way through five pitchers out of the Trojans bullpen.
Additionally, Maddy Azua tossed the complete game for Texas State recording her 18
th win of the season while tying her season-high of 11 in strikeouts.Â
How It Happened:
The Bobcats started off well, with
Keely Williams leading the game off with a walk. She and
Harley Vestal who singled would get themselves into scoring position early. The pair were left stranded though, after a
Kat Zarate strikeout.
Troy took no time getting runners on, singling on the second pitch of the game. From there a walk and a pair of stolen bases put runners in scoring position. One would go on to score from a pass ball, another on an error from Bobcat catcher
Megan Kelnar. Despite allowing just one hit in the opening inning, Texas State trailed 2-0.
The Trojans piled three more runs on in the 2
nd inning, off two hits and two more Bobcat errors. After a plethora of defensive mistakes, Texas State found themselves with their back against the wall.
A scoreless third frame helped Texas State settle back into the game and start its scoring in the 4
th. It started with a lead off single from Coleman, followed by a single from
Kate Bubela and a Mayson Garret walk to load the bases. Williams opened the scoring with an RBI single, followed up by a sac fly from
Sydney Harvey to make it 5-2. Though still with work to do, the Bobcat bats started heating up in the 4
th.
Troy answered that with two runs off a home run in the bottom of the 4
th, though.
From there, Texas State answered again in the 5
th, starting again with a leadoff single. Bass singled to left center, followed up by Zarate's single to right. The pair both scored on Coleman's 11
th home run of the season, the 27
th of her career. It was now a 7-5 game after Coleman's swing.Â
Azua tallied two strikeouts in the bottom half of the 5
th to kill the momentum the Trojans tried to build. Texas State carried that with a four-run 6
th inning. Another leadoff single, this time from Vestal, was the starting point once again. A Bass walk put runners on first and second, loading the bases with a Coleman walk to follow that up.
Kate Bubela singled to second base to tie the ball game.
With runners still on,
Sami Hood hit a double off the wall in left center to score Coleman and Bubela to put the Bobcats ahead.Â
Troy had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6
th with their three hits, but Azua matched that with three strikeouts of her own. Her final out of the inning came on a three-pitch K with the bases loaded to escape the inning unscathed.
Texas State added two insurance runs in the 7
th off the bat of Bass' first home run of the season. Her 2 RBI homer scored Harvey who singled to get on base.
Azua retied the Trojans in order with two groundouts to short and her 11
th strikeout of the night in the 7
th.
After today's win, Texas State is now 26-16 on the season and improve to 7-6 in Sun Belt play.
