San Antonio – In a battle of two squads looking for their third straight win, the Texas State women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision in its I-35 Maroon-Orange rivalry match at UTSA on Wednesday night. Both teams had to wait out a two-and-a-half hour delay due to wet court conditions before the match began.
 
Texas State (7-10) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when the Bobcats won two of the three doubles matches to claim the team point.
 
Pippa Carr and Eva Dench began the evening winning their No. 2 doubles match by a score of 6-3 over Lina Hallgren and Charlene Tiwari.
 
UTSA jumped back into contention for the doubles point when Ana Perez and Yadira Rubio fell 6-3 against Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell Canudas on Court 1.
 
Katy Collins and Ammaarah Tim beat Sonia Madronal Medina and Alena Shichkova 7-6 after winning an 8-6 tiebreaker on Court 3 to clinch the team point for the Bobcats.
 
However, UTSA rallied for four straight victories in singles matches to improve their overall record to 10-9 this season. First, Rubio fell in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) against Junger in the No. 3 match. Then, Nicole Karaklis beat Tim by the score of 6-3, 6-3 on court six to give the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead.
 
Carr and Dench put up tough fights, but came up short as UTSA clinched the victory with a pair of wins in the top two seeded matches. First, Carr suffered a 7-5, 7-5 loss against Shichkova on Court 2, while Dench fell in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) against Rosell Canudas in the No. 1 match.  
 
Following Wednesday night's match, the Bobcats return home for their final three matches of the regular season before traveling the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Texas State hosts UL Lafayette on April 8 at 1:30 p.m. and UT Arlington on April 10 at 10 a.m. The Bobcats close out the regular season hosting UT Rio Grande Valley on April 16 at 10 a.m. before traveling to the SBC Tournament in New Orleans on April 21-24.
