LAFAYETTE, La. – Eva Dench won the top-seeded singles match and teamed with
Pippa Carr for a doubles win to lead the Texas State women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over UL Monroe in a neutral site match Friday afternoon.
Dench and Carr combined for a 6-2 triumph over Paulina Van Herck and Iona Popescu on the No. 2 court to clinch the team doubles point and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. The victory also improved their record to 4-1 in No. 2 matches the season.
Their win came after senior
Katy Collins and
Ammaarah Tim teamed for a 6-1 win over Martina Husarova and Patricia Villar in the No. 3 doubles match.
The Bobcats increased their lead to 2-0 when Carr won her No. 2 singles match against Van Herck by a score of 6-3, 6-0.
The Warhawks came back to tie the score at 2-2 with a pair of singles victories. First,
Ana Perez suffered her second straight loss when she dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision against Luana Stanciu on the No. 5 court. Then,
Yadira Rubio suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss against Tiffany Mylonas on the No. 3 court.
Texas State regained the lead at 3-2 when Tim posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Popescu on court 6. However, the Warhawks tied the score for a second time when Collins fell in three sets (2-6, 6-0, 6-4) against Villar on court 4.
With the outcome of the match hanging in the balance, Dench had to come from behind to win her second No. 1 singles match of the spring.
After dropping the first set by a score of 7-6 after Husarova won the tiebreaker, 10-8, Dench responded by winning the second set by a score of 6-0. Then, she captured the third set by a score of 6-3.
With the win, Texas State improves to 6-9 overall this season and the Bobcats are 1-1 against Sun Belt Conference teams this year. UL Monroe fell to 10-3. The Bobcats will play Arkansas State on Saturday morning on the Cajun Courts at 9 a.m.
