Gulf Shores, Ala. – The Texas State women's tennis team suffered its second loss on a three-game road trip in Alabama when the Bobcats fell 4-1 against Nicholls State on Saturday afternoon.
For the second straight day, Texas State got off to a fast start and seized some early momentum when the Bobcats won a pair of doubles matches to capture the team doubles point.
In the top-seeded doubles match, freshmen
Yadira Rubio and
Ana Perez combined to win their second straight match with a 7-5 victory over Stephanie Barnett and Ambika Pande.
Katy Collins and
Eva Dench also improved to 2-1 this season when they teamed up for a 6-3 triumph over Clemence Krug and Isla Brock in the No. 2 match.
However, the momentum gained in the doubles play didn't carry over into singles as Nicholls State won four matches to capture the victory. First, Rubio fell in the No. 1 match against Barnett by score of 6-0, 6-2.
Then,
Pippa Carr suffered a 6-1, 6-3 setback against Melendez in the No. 3-seeded match. Collins also suffered a 6-3, 6-2 loss against Krug in the No. 4 match.
Nicholls clinched the victory when Perez fell by a score of 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 5 match. The other singles matches were halted after Nicholls won its fourth match.
The loss drops Texas State's record to 0-3 this season while Nicholls State improved to after winning two of its last three matches with a win over Louisiana Tech and a 4-3 loss against UL Monroe.
The Bobcats concluded the trip in Alabama on Sunday when they play at No. 43-ranked Auburn on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
