Women's Tennis Sweeps Two Matches Against Northwestern State and Alcorn State

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Texas State women's tennis won a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon when the Bobcats defeated Northwestern State and Alcorn State at the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Tennis Complex. This marks the first time that Texas State has won two matches on the same day since Jan. 29, 2011.
 
The Bobcats began Saturday with a 4-2 victory at Northwestern State when Texas State won the doubles point and three of the five singles matches against the Lady Demons.
 
Yadira Rubio and Ana Perez combined to win their doubles match against Natalya Krutova and Iryna Vardanian by a score of 6-2 on court one. Then, Pippa Carr teamed with Joy Chia Ming Ming to defeat Alzbeta Veverkova and Ilijana Ivic by the same score on court 3 to give the doubles point to the Bobcats.
 
Rubio also won her first singles match of the spring when she defeated Ivic by a score of 6-2, 6-3 on the number 4 court. Then, Carr gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead when she beat Vardanian in the No. 2 match by a score of 6-3, 6-0.
 
Northwestern State scored their first point of the day when Polina Mutrel won her match on court three against Katy Collins. Mutrel won the first set by a score of 6-3, and won the second set 7-6 after capturing the tiebreaker by a score of 10-8.
                                                                                        
The Lady Demons scored their second point when Ivanova defeated Perez by a score of 7-5, 6-3 on court six.
 
Joy Chia Ming Ming clinched Texas State's second win of the season when she won her No. 5 match by a score of 7-5, 6-3 against Veverkova.
 
Texas State also won the team doubles point and three singles matches against Alcorn State for its second win of the day.
 
The Bobcats began the second match with Rubio and Perez winning a 6-2 decision over Ekaterina Potapova and Siobhan Ryan-Bovey by a score of 6-2 on court one. Then, Eva Dench and Collins defeated Aida Kelic and Laura Arruda by a score of 6-2 on court two to clinch the doubles point for Texas State.
 
Rubio won her second straight singles match when she beat Arruda by a score of 6-2, 6-1 on court four. Perez also beat Aakansksha Punj by a score of 6-0, 6-2 on court sis before Carr clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ivana Boberic on court two.
 
The two victories improve Texas State's overall record to 3-5 and give the Bobcats three victories in their last four matches. Texas State will look to win its third straight match and second match in San Antonio this spring when the Bobcats play Air Force at the UTSA Tennis Center on Feb. 27.
