RUSTON, La. - The Texas State women's tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss at Louisiana Tech on Friday afternoon in the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.
The match began with hard-fought doubles matches that featured the two teams splitting the first two decisions and a tiebreaker ultimately deciding which team would win the doubles point.
First,
Ana Perez and
Yadira Rubio dropped a 6-1 decision against Alexandra Starkova and Zoe Chen on court one.
Then, Texas State got back into contention when
Katy Collins and
Eva Dench combined for a 7-5 victory over Marie Sramkova and Jazmin Britos on court two. It was the second straight victory for Collins and Dench, and their fourth win in the last five matches.
However, the Lady Techsters captured the doubles point when
Pippa Carr and
Joy Chia Ming Ming fell by a score of 7-6 on court three after losing the tiebreaker, 7-5, against Manoela Chiacchio and Taly Merker.
After the doubles point was decided, Texas State dropped three straight singles matches in straight sets to give the Lady Techsters the victory.
Perez began the singles matches with a 6-0, 6-1 loss against Chiacchio on court five. Then, Dench fell 6-4, 6-3 against Britos on court one. The final outcome came on court three where Rubio suffered a 6-4, 7-5 loss against Chen.
The loss at Louisiana Tech marks the first time this season that Texas State has been shut out and drops its record to 1-5. The loss also came after the Bobcats won their first match of the spring at Incarnate Word last Saturday.
Louisiana Tech improved to 8-2 with its fourth straight victory and seventh win in its last eight matches.
WHAT'S NEXTThe Bobcats will be looking for their second and third wins of the season when Texas State plays a pair of matches on Saturday at the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Tennis Complex in Natchitoches, La.
Texas State begins the day against Northwestern State at 9:30 a.m., and is scheduled to play against Alcorn State at 12:30 p.m.
Both Northwestern State and Alcorn State are looking for their first wins this spring. The Lady Demons are 0-5 this season after beginning a three-match home stand with a 5-2 loss against UTSA on Friday. Alcorn State is 0-6 after falling 7-0 at New Orleans last Saturday.
