SAN MARCOS, Texas – In a match played on both outdoor and indoor courts, the Texas State women's tennis team put up a good fight, but it was not enough when the Bobcats dropped a 6-0 decision against South Alabama on Sunday morning at the Bobcat Tennis Center.
Â
The Bobcats entered the match shorthanded with just five players for the second straight day and began the day trailing 1-0 after surrendering the No. 6 singles match with a walkover. The Jaguars also needed to win just one of the two remaining doubles matches to capture another point.
Â
Even though Texas State entered the both doubles matches with its backs to the wall, the Bobcats put themselves in position to win both matches.
Â
In the No. 2 match,
Shannon Beckett and
Monica Pieratt fought back from a 5-4 deficit to tie the score at 6-6 before USA's Michaela Meszarosova and Emily Newton won the next two points for the win.
Â
The No. 1 match ended in similar fashion as Texas State's
Ana Laura Gutierrez and
Pippa Carr fought back to tie the score at 6-6, but Monica Mitta and Laura Valkova also scored the final two points to give the Jaguars a victory in all three doubles matches.
Â
After a light rain in the area made the outdoor courts unsafe to play, the singles matches moved to Texas State's two indoor courts
Â
Eva Dench dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Mary Angela Martin in the No. 4 match. Then Beckett suffered a 6-0, 6-4 loss against Laura Matuskova.
Â
The first set of the No. 3 match had to be decided by an extended tiebreaker as Carr and Mitta battled to a 6-6 tie before Mitta won the tiebreaker, 10-8, and came back to win the second set by a score of 6-1.
Â
In the No. 2 match, Gutierrez also put up a strong fight in the first set before Newton would win it by a 7-5 score. Newton also captured the match when she won the second set by a score of 6-2.
Â
With South Alabama having to catch a flight back to Mobile, the No. 1 match between Pieratt and Valkova was not played due to time constraints.
Â
The loss drops Texas State's record to 1-3 this season, while South Alabama improves to 4-0. The Bobcats will look for their second win of the season when they host UT Pan American next Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Bobcat Tennis Complex. Texas State will also play Northwestern State on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
