Box Score ARLINGTON, Texas – For the second day in a row, the Bobcats fell in a hotly contested 1-0 game against UT Arlington to complete the sweep for the Mavericks and drop Texas State to 28-26 on the season and 16-14 in the Sun Belt Conference. With the final record, the Bobcats will own the fourth seed in the SBC Championship Tournament next week.
Â
Cory Geisler,
Tyler Pearson and
Tanner Hill knocked the only hits of the game for Texas State, each finishing with one apiece. The Mavericks finished the game with seven hits, two from leadoff man Derek Miller.
Â
In four innings of work
Lucas Humpal struck out five batters and only walked one while giving up just two hits in a strong outing. The Bobcats would finish with seven strikeouts in the game while UTA pitcher Brad Vachon went seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, three walks and three hits. Keegan Hucul went two hitless innings for UT Arlington.
Â
The Mavericks scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning. Eric Tate led off the inning with a single and successfully stole second base, sliding in on a close call. Ryan Bottger followed with a walk. With two men on, a Matt Shortall groundout pushed both runners into scoring position, and John Michael Twichell followed with a two-strike single to shallow right field to break the tie and claim a 1-0 UTA lead..
Â
Texas State did a good job of limiting UT Arlington after that. With bases loaded and one out,
Andrew Boes took the mound to strike out one batter and force the other one into a fly ball that
Granger Studdard handled in left field to keep it at just a 1-0 deficit.
Â
Through four innings, Texas State's best opportunity came in the fourth. With two outs,
Ben McElroy drew a walk. After that,
Tyler Pearson sent a hit up the middle on which UTA second baseman Darian McLemore made a diving stop. Pearson was safe at first, but McLemore made an errant throw to push McElroy to third and put runners at the corners with two outs. Unfortunately for Texas State, a foul out ended the scoring chance.
Â
The best early opportunity for the Mavericks came in the bottom of the fifth when they pushed Greg McCall to third base. He reached on a hit by pitch and went to second on a base knock from McLemore. A fielder's choice pushed him to third, but another fielder's choice ended the chance for UTA.
Â
In the top of the sixth, Geisler knocked a leadoff single, his first hit of the series. Once on, the speedy Geisler stole second base and went to third on a fly out to centerfield. Consecutive Bobcat strikeouts, though, left Geisler stranded at third base to keep the game without a run. The Mavericks would change that in the bottom of the inning.
