Home Runs Lift UTSA Past Texas State

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Four home runs that attributed to five runs helped push the UTSA Roadrunners to a 9-6 victory over the Texas State softball team on Wednesday evening in a non-conference, single game in San Antonio. Texas State's Katie Doerre hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to help the Bobcats put up four runs in an attempted rally against the Roadrunners.

Doerre finished the day going 2-for-3 with three RBI as the Bobcats fell to 21-21 overall.

The first four runs of the ball game all came from the bats of UTSA. Roadrunner lead-off hitter Megan Low hit her 17th and 18th home runs of the season in her first two at bats of the day to give UTSA an early 3-0 lead.

To follow up the home runs by Low, Jolene Graham recorded the third UTSA home run of the day in the bottom of the third, giving UTSA a 4-0 edge on the Bobcats.

Texas State answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on three hits. Doerre started the rally for the Bobcats, hitting a single through the left side. Coralee Ramirez then made her way to first on a fielder's choice as the UTSA third baseman made an errant throw trying to get Doerre out at second. Then back-to-back singles by Delia Saucedo and Jordan Masek got the first Bobcat run on the board.

The Bobcats scored their second run of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Kelli Baker, scoring Ramirez. The Roadrunner catcher, however, ended the inning for the Bobcats as she threw out Saucedo as she attempted to take third on Baker's sacrifice fly.

The Roadrunners then put up four in the bottom of the fourth, capped by Low's third home run of the contest. Her 19 home runs this season currently is the highest mark in the nation.

Down 8-2 in the top of the fifth, the Texas State bats attempted to rally once again. This time, the Bobcats rattled off three singles in four at bats, scoring their third run of the ball game. With runners on second and third, Doerre launched her sixth home run of the season to cut the Roadrunner lead to two.

Before the game was over, the Roadrunners proceeded to add one more to their total while holding the Bobcats scoreless in the final two innings.

Each team finished the contest with 11 hits apiece. Ashley Wright was credited with the loss after she threw 4.1 innings of work. Along with Doerre, Saucedo and Timishia North each finished the game with two hits apiece.

Texas State will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series against conference opponent in Georgia State. First pitch in Atlanta is scheduled for 12 p.m. with game two of the doubleheader to start shortly after the conclusion of game one.
