Cory Geisler pitched the remaining 1.2 innings to get to Lemke without giving the Bears a hit. Boes notched two strikeouts.
In addition to the effective pitching and timely hitting in the eighth, the Bobcat defense played well throughout the game finishing without an error.
Matt Smith made an impressive backhanded play to close out the top of the fourth, scooping up a hit up the middle on the run and twisting around in the air to make the throw in time. The play was so good, he made ESPN Sportscenter's Top 10 plays.
Matt Sanchez ran down a fly ball in the sixth for another outstanding Texas State defensive play. He ranged far over to his right from centerfield for a diving grab for the first out of the inning. A line drive to Geisler in right and a groundout to Smith ended the top of the sixth for Baylor.
Texas State continued the efficient defensive play into the eighth. Baylor's eighth-inning leadoff hitter popped up a foul ball and
Tyler Pearson made a diving catch for the first out of the inning. Boes followed with his second strikeout of the night. Geisler took over on the mound later in the inning and picked up the final out of the top of the eighth on a pickoff. After that, it was Texas State's turn to claim the game at the plate.
Six Bobcats finished the night with a hit to outhit Baylor, 6-5. Texas State was also more aggressive on the base paths than usual, stealing seven bases led by
Granger Studdard's two.
Texas State will next head to Louisiana for a three-game Sun Belt Conference set at national No. 2 UL Lafayette. Games will be at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Fans can watch Saturday's game on ESPN3.
