Box Score

SAN MARCOS – After 27 combined runs in the first two games of the series between UT Arlington and Texas State, the Bobcats won the third game, 3-1, in a defensive battle on a windy Sunday at Bobcat Ballpark. Sunday's win completed a sweep of UT Arlington to start the Sun Belt Conference season for the Bobcats.

Series Summary
Game 1 TXST-10, UTA-5 Summary Box Score
Game 2 TXST-7, UTA-5 (11 Innings) Summary Box Score
The Bobcats came up big in the eighth inning to win. David Paiz made his only hit of the day count, knocking in two runs on a double and scoring one more to push Texas State to victory.

Freshman outfielder Granger Studdard completed an impressive weekend with a 2-for-2 day with a walk. The Mavericks showed him respect with an eighth-inning intentional walk. Cody Lovejoy also added two hits while five other Bobcats knocked base hits against UT Arlington's Zach Thompson.

Texas State starter Lucas Humpal went 7.2 innings in the no decision. He gave up five hits but just one run with four strikeouts. He didn't walk a batter. Ross Goebel earned his second victory of the season while Hunter Lemke struck two out in the ninth for his sixth save of the year.

The Mavericks made it three consecutive games in which they scored first. Catcher Greg McCall led off with a double and went to third on a groundout. He scored on a wild pitch for the early 1-0 UTA lead in the second inning, but that would be all the Bobcats would allow.

After that, the game was quiet all the way to the eighth inning. With two outs, Tyler Pearson knocked a double into shallow centerfield, and then UTA intentionally walked Studdard. Paiz scored both base runners with his double to right field. Both hits to the outfield were aided a bit by the wind. It forced Pearson's to die early and helped Paiz's float right out of the outfielder's reach.

The Bobcats weren't done there though. Lovejoy followed with an infield single and pushed Paiz to third base. Paiz scored Texas State's third run on a balk.

Lemke made short work of the Mavericks in the ninth. He forced a groundout from the leadoff man and struck the next two batters out.

Texas State hosts Rice next for a 6:35 p.m. game on Tuesday that can also be seen on KBVO and ESPN3. The next weekend series will pit the Bobcats on the road against Western Kentucky at 6 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
