SAN MARCOS – After trailing No. 10 Texas by three runs Tuesday night, Texas State made up the deficit in the third inning to tie the game, 3-3. Unfortunately, it would not be enough as the Longhorns went ahead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and added two more runs in the ninth to win, 6-3, and drop the Bobcats to 10-6 on the season in front of a tied Texas State record of 2,603 in attendance.
David Paiz was a bright spot for the Bobcats with a 2-for-3 night with a walk and a run. Five other Bobcats knocked a hit for seven total in the game.
Â
Cory Geisler was a highlight for the pitching staff, going 4.1 innings in relief and only giving up one hit and a walk with three strikeouts. He reached career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts. He did not allow a run. Starter
Dylan Bein struck five out in the first 3.2 innings of the game.
Â
The Longhorns made an early statement with a leadoff home run from Ben Johnson to start the game with an early 1-0 lead. Texas piled on in the second inning, scoring two more runs thanks to a hit by pitch, a single and a triple that almost went out of the park to push the lead up to 3-0.
Â
Austin O'Neal and
Matt Smith tried to answer in the bottom of the second when O'Neal hit a two-out single. Smith followed with a deep hit to right center, but Texas centerfielder Mark Payton made an impressive diving catch for the final out of the inning.
Â
Texas State was able to answer an inning later when
Garrett Mattlage and Paiz knocked consecutive singles followed by walks for
Tyler Pearson and
Colby Targun. Paiz's single was a pop fly that just fell dead in shallow right field.
Â
Targun's walk plated Mattlage for Texas State's first run of the game.
Tanner Hill followed with a shot the third baseman couldn't handle to score Paiz. The Bobcats continued rounding the bases when
Granger Studdard knocked a single to left field to bring in Pearson and tie the game, 3-3.
Â
After the three-spot from Texas State, Longhorn catcher Tres Barrera led off the fourth with a triple. Johnson was able to plate Barrera with a sacrifice fly to left field to regain a lead, 4-3.
Â
From there, the two defensive teams played scoreless baseball for four innings until the ninth. In fact, the Bobcats knocked just one hit, a single from Hill, throughout the rest of the game after their big third inning.
Â
Texas added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth to open the gap to 6-3 before Texas State's last at bat. The Bobcats went 1-2-3 with a groundout and two fly outs to the outfield
Â
The Bobcats will stay at home to host UT Arlington for the weekend series starting with a 6:30 p.m. game Friday followed by games at 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
