SAN MARCOS – Texas State sunk Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday night with a 6-4 victory to improve to 6-2 on the season before facing Wagner in the weekend series.
Tyler Pearson continued his strong hitting with a 2-for-4 night to lead the Bobcats. Four other Bobcats tallied a hit in the game, including
Ben McElroy and
Austin O'Neal in pinch hitting situations. O'Neal's hit scored two in the eighth to give the Bobcats some insurance runs late.
McElroy's hit also yielded an RBI as did hits from
Cody Lovejoy,
David Paiz and
Tanner Hill.
Cory Geisler picked up the win with a strikeout, one hit given up and a run in 2.1 innings of work.
Dylan Bein started and struck six out in 4.2 innings without giving up an earned run. As Bobcat fans are used to from his eight saves in 2013,
Hunter Lemke made the save, his first of 2014.
Texas State gave up a run in the top of the first on a combination of two walks, an error and a balk, but the Bobcats were able to answer in the bottom of the inning. Texas State loaded the bases with a hit by pitch, a single and a walk from the top of the lineup. With the bases load, Paiz hit a sacrifice fly and Hill followed with one of his own for a 2-1 lead after one.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shortstop Zack Gibson knocked a single with one out and the next two batters were hit by pitches. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Zach Hardy knocked a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 2-2. Other than that it was scoreless baseball through six and a half innings when both teams took a break for a brief rain delay.
Colby Targun came out of the rain delay with a single up the middle, and
Granger Studdard followed with a walk. McElroy knocked his single down the right line to score Targun for the 3-2 lead. Lovejoy put the ball in play next to score Studdard for the two-run lead, 4-2.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi pulled within one in the top of the eighth after a hit by pitch and consecutive singles, but pitcher
Tyler Davenport was able to get the out the Bobcats needed to keep the lead, 4-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bobcats added their insurance runs off the bat of O'Neal. Hill reached on an error followed by a single from Pearson. Studdard loaded the bases on another error from TAMUCC. After that, facing two outs, O'Neal knocked a hit to left field to push the lead to 6-3 and ensure the Texas State victory.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was able to score one run in the ninth but it would not be enough against the Bobcats.
Texas State will be back at it this weekend when the Bobcats host Wagner for the weekend series. Games are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
