Softball Sweeps Day Two Of Texas Shootout

DENTON, Texas – The Texas State softball team bounced back after its 1-0 loss yesterday with a pair of victories at the Texas Shootout on Friday afternoon. In game one of the afternoon for the Bobcats, Texas State defeated former Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State by a score of 4-2. To wrap up the afternoon, the Bobcats defeated Abilene Christian by a score of 8-3.
 
Texas State improves to 10-4 on the season, which continues to be the best start since the 2004 season.
 
Against the Bearkats, the Bobcats scored the first three runs of the game in the third and fourth innings. The first Bobcat run came by way of Timishia North who doubled Kelli Baker home.
 
Errors plagued Sam Houston State in the top of the fourth and the Bobcats capitalized on them. With one out, junior Kortney Koroll got the Bobcat bats started with a single to left field. It was on the next batter, Delia Saucedo, which the string of Bearkat errors occurred. Saucedo reached on by an error on the shortstop, allowing Koroll's pinch runner, Alli Akina to score. Saucedo then made her way to second after the Bearkat right fielder committed the second error of the inning.
 
Lexi Fryar earned an RBI after hitting Saucedo home on a sac fly to notch the second Bobcat run of the fourth.
 
Sam Houston got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, but with the bases loaded and two outs, Texas State centerfielder North made a play to end the Bearkats chances of adding more.
 
After Sam Houston added another run in the bottom of the sixth, Texas State answered with an assurance run in the top of the seventh. Jordan Masek started the inning off with a single to the pitcher, and ultimately found her way home when North singled to right.
 
Rayn House earned her seventh victory of the season while Kaylee Garner picked up her second save of the year. House struck out six while walking just two. In Garner's one and two/thirds innings pitched, she struck out two while allowing one hit.
 
North finished the game going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's. Kelli Baker, Courtney Harris, Koroll, Saucedo, and Masek all added a hit for the Bobcats.
 
In game two, Texas State scored all eight of its runs in the first, second, and third innings. A pair of singles along with back-to-back walks allowed for Texas State to score in the bottom of the first.
 
Along with hitting 10 hits in game two, the Bobcats took advantage of four untimely errors by Abilene Christian.
 
Texas State recorded three hits in its big third inning, led by a double by senior Coralee Ramirez in just her second game of the season. North continued her successes at the plate, belting another single to left center field, scoring Baker, who walked after the Ramirez double, and Ramirez.
 
In the top of the fourth, Abilene Christian hit a two-run shot to cut the Bobcat lead to five with just one out. Kendall Wiley, however, took care of business at first, catching two foul balls for the second and third outs.
 
Texas State threatened to score once again in the bottom of the fourth, having runners on second and third with just one out. Abilene Christian worked its way out of the inning, forcing back-to-back pop ups by the Bobcats.
 
Ashley Wright earned the victory against Abilene Christian, putting in four and two/thirds on the mound while striking out two.
 
Ramirez made her presence known at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Wiley also added another multi-hit game to her season, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
 
Texas State will continue play tomorrow at the Texas Shootout as it will take on Prairie View A&M at 3 p.m. Live stats will be made available at txstatebobcats.com.
