Soccer Beats Troy 2-1 For First Sun Belt Victory

TROY, Ala. – The Texas State soccer team picked up its first Sun Belt Conference victory and its first road victory since the win against Northwestern State as they defeated the Troy Trojans by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the Bobcats improve 4-5-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Sun Belt action.

Texas State got on the board in the fourth minute of the contest as senior Sydney Curry took control of the ball outside the 18-yard box to ultimately fire a shot to the back right corner of the mesh. Curry's goal was unassisted and it was her third goal of the season.

Just 45 seconds later, the Trojans answered with a goal of their own to tie up the game at one a piece. Cecilia Thorngren scored her fourth goal of the season after taking a shot inside the box.

Approximately 13 minutes later, the Bobcats took what would prove to be the final lead of the contest as Ali Myers connected off a deflected shot by Gabbi Cottee and found the back of the net. The original play was started by Tori Hale as she hit a cross pass that deflected off of Cottee and into the line of Myers inside the Trojan goal box.

The Bobcats went into the half with 15 shots as the Trojans got off 11. Troy recorded three corners compared to one by the Bobcats.

All 45 minutes of the second half proved to be a defensive battle between the two squads as the first half score remained through the end of the game.

Texas State finished the game with 22 shots and 12 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Natalie Gardini recorded four saves in the victory.

The Bobcats will return home to the Bobcat Soccer Complex next weekend as they are set to host Georgia State on Friday evening and Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon. Kick off in San Marcos is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday night.
